UPDATE from the "Economist" of November 30th 1996, page 90:

GOBBLEDYGOOK

A sentence from Roy Bhaskar's "Plato etc: The Problems of Philosophy and their Resolution" (Verso; 267 pages: $19.00) has won the Bad Writing Contest sponsored by "Philosophy and Literature", a journal published by Hohns Hopkins University Press. It begins:

Indeed dialectical critical realism may be seen under the aspect of Foucauldian strategic reversal---of the unholy trinity of Parmenidean/Platonic/Aristotelean provenance; of the Cartesian-Lockean-Humean-Kantian paradigm, of foundationalisms (in practice, fideistic foundationalisms) and irrationalisms (in practice, capricious exercises of will-to-power or some other ideologically and/or psychosomatically buried source) new and old alike; of the primordial failing of western philosophy, ontological monovalence, and its close ally, the epistemic fallacy within its ontic dual; of the analytic....

?

The sentence contains 55 more words, but is harder to follow after this point.

Is it any wonder few choose to study philosophy these days?

I'm guilty of abusing rhetoric. A lot of times I write things that sound impressive or are excessive for the mere sake of it. I think that's fine so long as the writing isn't hard to understand. But the thing you quoted makes me madder than three kinds of hell.

ah, I stand corrected:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/det...nce&s=books

yeah I saw someone post the output of a computer program that just strung seemingly random needlessly complicated words together in semi-coherent sentence structures that lacked any semantic meaning. It looked remarkably similar.

now that i look closer I see that the dude is just trying to be really pretentious with what he's saying.

or he's trying to say something so mind boggling simple or complex that it cannot be put into words.

When I look at stuf like this, I can ussually understand what the writer is getting at,  with this one I really don't have a clue. Even when I sort of understand stuff like this  I'm always thinking there is some nuance I'm missing.

The one done on the computer  had a lot of contadictory statements that made it sound like nonsense. I still thought someone wrote it though.

I think he is trying to say..."Nothing is real"...in a way that puts money in his pocket.

I find it to be more entertaining than Hiawatha...but that's just me.
