I've been viewing Stamets as a passionate mushroom man more than a hard scientist. It makes his work easier to swallow, and he really loves mushrooms.

It's called a bias opinion, every field expert does it, they always try to answer things based on their professional field.
For example, a mathematician will try to solve natures riddles with numbers and maths, and so on.

This is where the jack of all trades, with ADHD and hyper-focus come in.

The best place to get up-to-date multi angle information, is here.
Albeit a bit scattered and under maintained in areas.

I like being corrected, it improves things.

This is by far the best source for information.  I just recently came back after a 15~ year hiatus and a lot of the information I learned back then is now outdated so it pays to check on this site before starting back with mycology.

Anyone who makes you sign a statement before buying a culture that you won't tell ANYONE where you got the culture is selling bunk, period.

In 2009 after I built our mushroom farm, I ordered a Portabella culture and a week after it arrived it was totally green with trichoderma, yet had never been opened or removed from the bag the test tube was shipped in.  I called to get a replacement and 'Jim' told me it must be because I'm inexperienced and screwed up the culture.  There would be no guarantee, and the 'contract' says if I told anyone it arrived contaminated they'd sue me.

So here's the bottom line Paul:  It arrived contaminated and your employees didn't make it right and wouldn't put you on the phone, so sue away.  I don't play games with unscrupulous vendors any more.  I thought I knew you better than that from our dealings in years past, but I was apparently mistaken.  With full knowledge that Vivian is terminally ill with cancer, you took my $150 dollars and sent me crap with no guarantee and then demanded my silence.  I could never in good conscience recommend anyone to order from you.

Aloha Medicinals has far superior and lower-age cultures(I love how you trademarked the term P-value  ) which are commercially viable and you'll get a replacement even years later if you lose it.

As you folks meet more and more professional mycologists in your travels, you'll find the number one thing you never do is name something after yourself.  This is what got Stephen Peele in so much trouble with the community fifteen to twenty years ago and nobody has forgotten about it yet.  You would think he wouldn't repeat the mistake, especially on something which has been used for years.

I think I'll trademark the name 'tree' because I have one in my back yard and it has bark and leaves.  If you want to call a woody proliferation which rises from roots in the ground with bark and leaves a tree, you have to pay me.

ive seen you say this before but why is it not called weilii anymore?

Psilocybe weilii was described as a new species by Paul Stamets in 1996 due to the presence of pleurocystidia, which was supposedly missing from P. caerulescens.

However Alonso studied the type collection, which was collected by Murrill in Alabama in 1923.  It has pleurocystidia.  Also AH Smith's notes from the 50's mention that he saw pleurocystidia, though he never published that.

Quote:

how does andrew weil feel about this?

I don't think he really likes it.  I told him in person a couple years ago, and he immediately ran out of the room and called Paul Stamets.  Paul was like....ummm....I don't know man....

The lesson to be learned here is that when you describe a new species, always check the closely related species to find out if they are actually the same.  Preferably by studying type collections.  If Paul had done this in 1996, he never would have published P. weilii.

P. caerulescens has several synonyms which will be synonymized in a new paper coming out soon - they include:  Psilocybe mazatecorum, Psilocybe caerulescens var. mazatecorum, Psilocybe caerulescens var. nigripes, Psilocybe mazatecorum f. ombrophila, Psilocybe mazatecorum f. heliophila, Psilocybe mixaeensis, Psilocybe caerulescens ssp. mazatecorum var. ombrophila, Psilocybe caerulescens ssp. caerulescens var. albida, Psilocybe wrightii, Psilocybe caerulescens var. ombrophila, Psilocybe heliconiae, Psilocybe weilii, Psilocybe villarrealiae, Psilocybe caribaea, Psilocybe bispora and Psilocybe subannulata.

Ok that last one is a critical failure.

----

By the way, the information on Tarragon oyster is out of data on our site, here.

Pleurotus eunosmus (wrong name), its: Pleurotus cornucopiae var. euosmus (Pleurotus euosmus).

"The Tarragon Oyster mushroom is closely related to Pleurotus ostreatus. According to Watling & Gregory, this mushroom is generally considered a form or variety of P. ostreatus, but differs in the strong smell of tarragon."

Wrong. It's a variation of Pleurotus cornucopiae.

----

Parent: Pleurotus cornucopiae (Branched Oyster) | Variations: Pleurotus euosmus (Tarragon Oyster), Pleurotus citrinopileatus (Golden Oyster).

I saved the water from soaking beech to make agar for psilo cyan. In your experience can you easily get too much wood tea in a medium like that from - idk - tannin levels or something or will they generally just love whatever wood extract you give them?

There is a limit to the total acidity, it's very possible to add too much.
If the pH is below 5, the laccase enzymes stop functioning.

Laccase is what decays-converts the extracts.

----

If the pH of the extract is 6.0-6.5 then you are good to go.
Else you will need to add more water or CaCO3.
