Good luck lemur

I've been trying to grow p. caerulescens from wild spores, but I haven't fruited any yet. I have a few wild clones on agar now also but they aren't ready to use yet.

This is a unmodified 20qt tub that I spawned on 11/5. MS syringe -> BRF cakes -> CVG. Cakes were inoculated on 9/23. Substrate height is about 6" with a thin casing layer of cvg.

There's some metabolites and a small green spot but the contams haven't been growing for a few weeks. Fingers crossed.

I don't check this tub everyday. I have some action finally!

Nothing incredible, but I'm excited to have some pins. I cracked the lid on the tubs and moved it under my lights. I think it looks like I might get a few more pins.  There's been an increase of metabolites also. I'm not sure if I'll get another flush, but I have some more attempts on the way.

Still chugging.  Should I mop up the pools of metabolites or just let it do its thing?

Nothing special, my thermostat is set to 68.  It's an older house so temps can swing a few degrees.

I was picking from June until late October this year.  Most of the prints I sent were post Irma. I started taking good prints around that time.

Thanks, I'm going to print and take clones of plenty.

I dabbed up some of the metabs. I have two more pins but some of the fruit are showing weird features.  One is flipped over and looks to be sterile.  The other cap seems to be bleached.  I left the lid off for a few hours today while I was working a half day.  Maybe direct light isn't good for these guys. The 20qt tub has an opaque lid.

I've been busy with the holidays, but here's another set of fruit.  Everything has been growing curled and thin, not really sure what that is about.  There's a couple different causes I can imagine.

I have enough dry now to try a potency test.  I'm waiting until I have a chance to do a two week tolerance break from 5-HT2A agonists though.

My minitub started getting some green mold growing on top:

It's still producing fruit so I decide to try some surgery. I've read many posts about how this never works, but hopefully it will at least slow the spread.

Other tubs going:

Potency is comparable to wild caerulescens.  I tried 4g dry with my girlfriend(each). It was a good time.

I've picked pounds of these.  Stronger than cubes, probably 1:1.5 in terms of potency by weight.  Wild can have some variation in potency, weaker and stronger.

Yea man, that's just some cased WBS in half pint wide-mouths with grain jar lids.  Going to leave the lids on so everything can bunch up a bit, then once casing layer (50/50+ peat/verm/gypsum/hydrated lime) colonizes a little bit, going to bury jars in a bed of perlite inside of a mini, pre-constructed SGFC, and fruit them.

I also g2g'ed some colonized WBS into a few quart jars of hydrated and sterilzed organic pine mulch supplemented with wheat bran.  Inoculated that mess a few days ago and it's already recovering strong.  It'll have to be until tomorrow night before I can take some pics and show ya, though.

Right. That's what I think I may do with my swab just to try and get something out of it. Was the pine mulch something you picked up or prepared yourself?

At some point, someone will stumble upon a culture that does fairly well, and then it is on. We just need this to be domesticated.

I think first we need to find out what it likes(conditions/sub) best an put together a solid tek with easily replicable results an then look for specimens for domestication for indoor cult that matches cubes productivity(possibly).

They grow in sunny locations, prefer muddy orangish brown soils with lots of woody debris.  That tells us they like lots of light.  As far as bulk substrate woody soils can be compensated for by using straw, and mulch.

Opted to use pine mulch, because this species is found growing in abundance in Georgia where a lot of pine trees grow.  Straw will be added for texture, and encouragement of a woody debris like substrate.  Coir will cover brownish soil department (straw/coir).  They fruit well in the low to mid 70's, as well.

Super glad to see that. Last year when I took some sprints and tried to inoculate WBS, I uploaded pics and was told it was just mold and to just throw everything outside cuz I probably have better luck. Wasn't very encouraging at all. But now, I have this jar of mycelium that has just been suspended and honey water for about a year and didn't know what to try and do next.

Obviously I need to get syringes. And I had been throwing around the idea of gathering red clay and pine straw and some mulch and mixing it all together and doing it that way. obviously I would pressure cook to sterilize before I put any of the mycelium in it.

I also wanted an opinion on the darker spots inside of it. Are these contaminants? Remember this is a Year's growth. the air was a few of them to start with, and now there's more, but none of them are any bigger than the ones you see and have not gotten bigger for a very long time.

Already inoculated two jars of rye seed with my clone LC and they’re caking up with myc!

Here’s one syringe of the LC and pics of GS:

I have 2 more 1/2 pint jars of LC, can I spread outside in the winter or will it kill the myc?

Unfortunately I didn’t have any luck producing fruits on my previous grows and turned my focus to cubes for a while.  Also had a stretch of contaminated batches of agar so I was dealing with mold and bacteria but now I’m back on track.:-)

Just getting back to trying my hand at Caerulescens again and have a new phenotype I came across in my experiments on agar that is looking promising. (I will post pics at the bottom)

This particular phenotype came from me experimenting with P. Caerulescens and it’s resistance to mold.  A while back I swabbed a contaminated plate with spores from a wild print I took this fall.  I let the plate grow until it was covered in green mold except for where the Caerulescens spores were germinating.  As I was hoping, the spores started to resist the mold and made a visible defensive barrier.

I very carefully took a small transfer from the center of the area the Caerulescens spores had germinated.

I was also experimenting with different types of agar during this time.  (Definitely too much going on at once so I’ve slowed down significantly).  This is T2 of the experiment on DFA.

Was looking like I had got away from the mold in just two xfers but it ended up coming back.  However I turned this into something I could learn more from and started a second experiment on agar. (Not going in depth on X2 at the moment, but I will).  This is the plate I took my T3’s from.

This is where I started to have issues with contaminated batches of agar which I believe was due to damaged caps on my media bottles and some of the agar recipes I was trying.

I have since got new media bottles, went back to a standard LME agar recipe (7g agar -> 7g LME -> 400mL distilled water) and contamination issues appear to have stopped.  Unfortunately I don’t have pics of my T4’s and T5’s because I was focused on getting clean plates of agar.

That brings me to T6 which was on LME agar and is the phenotype I mentioned at the beginning of this post.

Pics of T6:

Finally felt good enough to take it to grain and transferred to rye grass seed on 1/19.

GS jar as of 1/23 which is where I’m currently at.

This phenotype is acting similar to how Panelaeous does on grain.  Still trying to figure out what substrate to try this time.  Right now I’m thinking about a mix of coir, hwfp and dried/sterilized red clay.

Other subs I’ve tried so far:  CV, straight coir, coir:hwfp and straight hwfp.

I’m open to feedback or any suggestions!

Does this mean you've tried fruiting with these substrates? What were your spawn rates, and generally your fruiting protocol?

At what point are you marking it down as a fail?

Sorry just saw this.  Yes I have tried fruiting with these substrates with no luck.  I wasn’t as focused on conditions during my first few runs and I considered it a fail when the subs started showing signs of contamination which took a month or longer on a few.

I have 3 new runs going now based off of @CaptainFuture’s Weilii tek that are looking good so far.  Have a grow log going so I’ll have better documentation going forward. —> https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/25798110

Yeah BB, thank you! we're still workin on those, everything's on agar, but the only heat in my house is in my grow room, none in the lab, so everything moves slowwww brrr. we kinda just follow the flow of what looks ready to come out n play.
we should have some work from your samples comin out soon, I think we put the "summer" sample away for a later date, but working a few plates from the "winter" sample.

its just getting started ova here, we've now sourced several different samples of SE USA caerulescens, eventually we'll get a few all runnin at the same time.

we gon' be rrreal good friends, caeru n I, yes we are.

using the lc, we can test various substrates & conditions, compare results

working on a full proper grow log, will post in due time

if anyone has any genetics from mexico or elsewhere in latin america that they are willing to donate or share, itd be much appreciated. got lots to trade, holla!

SB #1 - Day 13 since cased.  Casing is not colonizing but I’m starting to see growth on the surface.  Think it needs more FAE so I’m leaving the lid off for the day.  Saw a recent post from Roger Rabbit stating that myc grows around the casing.  Hopefully this is what I’m seeing.

Myco bag #1 - Day 11 since cased.  It’s had more FAE than SB#1.  Had a lot of moisture in the bottom of the bag so there have been a couple days, off and on, where I’ve left the bag open.

Nice! what is the casing layer, cactus soil?

this wbs bag is bout colonized. we'll probably let it go another week or so to consolidate further, but then what idk. was thinking just case the grains, keep it simple, should get at least a few fruits right? but while drifting to sleep the other night, thought popped up to expand.

-should we case the grains and just go?
-should we prep some bulk sub, then
-dump colonized grains into bulk sub?
-dump bulk sub into colonized grains?

probably would just keep things in the bags if were going to expand, as moving both grain spawn and bulk subs to a new separate container is just adding an extra step for contams to enter.

it could be informative to see how just cased grains compare to bulk sub mix tho

we just dumped some oyster spawn into a bulk bag of coffee-straw, but it looks like it going green. so thats discouraging. i fear this place is just too old and moldy to open bags for transfers, can only get away with quick move precision of forceps & syringes.

Thanks!  These are my best looking attempts so far but I have yet to produce any fruits.

I’ve been doing spawn to bulk recently and so far so good.  I’ve tried several other methods with no luck.  Even just casing GS.  The Caeru myc seems to metabolize grain quickly if you don’t have something mixed with it.

Method used so far is agar ~ grain ~ bulk sub ~ casing.  Spawning in jars then transferring to myco bag to colonize sub, then transferring to SB.  Let it recover 2-3 days before casing.  Probably going to do an LC for the next batch.

Sub I’ve been using is 30% Straw, 30% straw pellets, 20% pine shavings, 20% hpoo PC’d for 4 hours at 15 psi.

These two are cased with peat, verm and perlite with CaCO3 to bring the pH up to 7 - 7.5.  I cased my 2nd SB with Miracle Grow Potting Mix which already has additives to raise the pH.  Going to see how it performs and if it does well, use it going forward.

Update 03-13-19:

Day 24 - SB#1 is starting to develop hyphal knots!  The sub seemed overly wet so I took the lid off and put it in my GH which is currently set at 75% RH.  This has allowed the moisture in the sub to evaporate but the casing has stayed wet.

MB #1 is showing the most growth of the 3 experiments and I noticed my first primodia forming!  Sub was looking too wet in the bag as well so I left it open in my GH for a few days.  Once the sub was dry and it looked like dry patches of the casing were showing I took it out, watered the dry patches with a syringe and re-clamped the bag.

SB #2 is coming along nicely but was cased about 9 days after SB#1 so it has some catching up to do.  I will say that I am seeing surface growth appear faster with the MG Potting Mix casing so far.

Nice!  That’s how I got started.  They started growing in my yard a couple years ago.  Very resistant to contaminants.  Even with wild prints I’ve never had a contaminated plate with initial inoculation, only if something was wrong with my agar and everything got contaminated.

This grow log from @CaptainFuture has been the most helpful for me.  Made some minor changes but don’t have any results yet.

Good luck!

Are you using rye grass seed, rye berries or oats?  Any time I’ve used RGS I have problems with contamination.  Oats have worked best for me.

I'm out of oats, I can get a bag easy enough but it's a 15 minute drive and I dont have a car atm. I only have wbs. They're such a pain to get right  I find cold soaking for like 24 hrs works best for me (after picking all the shit out of it).

Only good thing about them is how small they are, oats are far easier to use though. Might have to make an effort to get some tomorrow.

Im new so how does this compare to cube or pan? Im wondering which type would be grown from a medium of

Natural Organic Brown Rice Flour
Vermiculite
Mineral Water
Liquid worm castings
Bee Pollen

I would be looking for visuals, something potent. Thanks in advance.

caerulescens are supposed to be a good 2-3x ++ the potency of cubensis, but I think it they can vary quite a bit
I’ve not yet tried them myself, that’s just what I read

I think caerulescens are considered either a secondary or tertiary decomposer of wood, not sure how well it does on fresh wood chips, but old wood, sawdust, straw, manure, pine needles, leaf compost are things it seems to prefer.

You could try brf/Verm/worms, but my first thought is it might like something more fibrous
But I think the whole point of this thread is that no one really has a solid recipe or tek down, to my knowledge- we’re all tryin to figure it out

I haven’t taken a full therapeutic dose but I ate one shroom, probably 1/2g dry, as my microdose before going to work and I started tripping while talking to my supervisor.  Totally lost concentration, supervisor was talking but I wasn’t comprehending what he was saying.  Didn’t have full visuals but every had a halo around it that moved in and out with each breath.  I can only imagine taking 2-3g.  Hopefully soon!

It didn’t last long as it was a small dose but for those 20 min I was a bit worried.  Was not expecting to trip on such a low dose.

Thanks!  Spotted some trich on the bottom of the box so I’m hoping the fruits reach maturity before the trich takes over...  On a side note there are quite a few more pins coming up and the first couple are getting plump!  Here are the best pins so far.

those first two bags i had posted went bad. this was first time trying bags, so still figuring it all out.

looks like contams got in during inoculation, no injection ports on the bags, just duct tape. few lil yellow n green spots. either spent too long squirting lc round the bag, or the seal covering the injection site was not secure, maybe both- either way, must have let some dirty air in. contams are mainly concentrated near injection site.

got a second round coming. it looks better, ill post pics in a few days. but we nocced up the second round BEFORE noticing the contams in first round, so did not modify technique a whole lot. probably got a better seal over the hole, but still took time squirting lc round the bag.

if these go bad too, then will try again, this time put a dab of rtv silicone on the bag, boom! injection ports, should solve the contam issues. third times a charm, right?

the bad bags went into potted plants. they were all both 75% colonized or more, so hopefully something pops up.

That sucks man.  Definitely been there.  This is my 7th or 8th attempt with a lot of agar work. Was a lot of trial and error.  @CaptainFutures Weilii grow log got me on the right path.  I’d check it out if you haven’t already.  My method was print ~ agar ~ GS ~ MB with sub~ SB.  Going to try LC on the next batch.  Keep at it!  If I can help I’m happy to share the limited knowledge I have.

So far SB#1 is the only thing that is fruiting.  I used 3 different phenotypes and 3 different methods.  Think this next round I’ll use the same method on all 3 to see if it makes a difference.

SB#1 has new pins popping up daily!:-)

ok we got a new bag, same LC.

this is 20 days after inoculation

sub: 1:2:1:1 WBS:"manure mix":"SG mix":fir shavings

"manure mix": 6:4:3:2:1 horse manure: coco: oat bran: wheat straw: verm

"SG mix": 2:1:1 sweet gum wood: sweet gum gumballs: sweet gum leaves

theres a small bit left to colonize at the bottom, and think it needs some time to digest the wood, but looks about 95% colonized, no sign of contaminants.

will probably leave to consolidate for another week or two, then idk gotta case it with something... we might try to find some red clay soil, mix 2:1:1 clay:peat:sand, with just a pinch of verm... suggestions??
if we were to case with red clay soil, wouldn't that be relatively acidic? whereas most casings we prepare are slightly basic, right? thoughts??

we'll prep some more bags soon with silicone for injection ports, should solve contaminant issue.

Nice!  Let me know how those subs work out.  I ended up planting my mycobag outside bc it wasn’t really doing anything, the weather’s getting warmer and it was getting loaded with trich.  Just did a few A2G transfers to get my next batch going.

Fruits are growing extremely slow in SB#1 but I have one that the veil broke on recently.:-).  The rest are still pins.  Weather is supposed to be nice in a couple days so I may put my tub outside.  It’s also loaded with trich now.

As far as casing I had the best luck in SB #1 which was:

Peat Moss 7 cups
Vermiculite 3 cups
Perlite 2 cups
Water 6 cups
CaCO3 to bring the pH up to 7 - 7.5.

I packed it down as much as I could since they are growing in an area with thick red clay, sand and dirt in my yard.  Only thing I’m going to change up is the depth.  Since I’m packing it down I’m only going to use about 1/2” instead of the 1.5” that was recommended the last time.

This batch is with spawn from the wild prints I took last Oct./Nov.  Changed my spawn to sub ratio from 1:1 to 1:2 and am using a 12 qt boot box.

Spawned 4/28:

Anyone else having any luck?

Looks like healthy myc.  This strain in general colonizes and fruits very slow.

What are you planning to use for sub?

The mycelium grew just fine for me, but yeah getting it to fruit is ~3 month colonization/fruiting period. My best results were with just coir.  Any fruit pics brain?

I had a ton of aborts but two reached maturity about a month after spawning.  After the second fruit trich took over.

Fruit 1:

Fruit 2:

Not bad. You said you got a print too? I thought everything I was growing was sterile but I let some go past prime and those put out some light prints.  Haven't gotten around to trying those spores yet. I'm glad to see someone else trying and sharing.

Yeah I meant to post this pic as well.  F2 spores still haven’t germinated but this is the print from F1.

alright yall, advice needed

we got that spawn bag, fully colonized, opened 4.9.19. cut the bag so the top half is exposed, both top and top half of sides, but bottom & lower sides are still in plastic. all sides cased with with peat moss mixed with river clay.
its been like 5 weeks. top gets misted bout every-other day. maybe a week or two ago, the block was submerged in a pot of cold water for a few hours, trying to super-hydrate + cold shock. the block sits open air in the grow room, under some banana plants. temps range from ~68F at night to ~86F during the day, hard to keep steady this time of year, but mostly sticks round 78F. humidity also fluctuates, but my guess is its usually between 70-80%. theres a fan in the room, not directed at the block, but providing steady airflow.

i do see new growth coming through the casing layer where the plastic still covers.

i know these guys are supposed to take a while to pin, like 6-9 weeks seems standard. its bout to be show time! any advice on how to get this block to start popping???
do i need to work on keeping things consistent? are these temps okay? does it need to be wayyy humid? should limit the FAE for a week or something, then re-expose to air??

its supposed to be drizzly-rainy for the next week or so outside, but its warm spring rains finally, even a lil muggy out... i am wondering if i should maybe set the block outside somewhere?? we have successfully fruited atl7 outdoors in May a few years back, and iirc have seen posts of folks collecting these with caerus at same time/same site...

trying to be patient here, but also getting anxious like maybe we should do something to create better fruiting conditions.... help!!

Good work so far spitzenkorper. Cool to see you are playing with Caerus.

The river clay is an interesting choice.  These guys don't really need it, I would leave it next time.  The clay will just thicken our casing making it tougher for pins to form.

If your block is thick and you added wood, then pins will take longer.  I've found that Caerulescens doesn't require much wood or even any at all. I've done both fresh and composted wood at less than 10%, 5%, and none, and found them to still produce normal fruitbodies.

In regards to your fruiting environment, those temperatures are fine. I would increase the humidity though as much as possible (close to 100%) to help induce pins.  We want the environment saturated up until pins form, then add the fresh air as needed to form the fruitbodies.  I wouldn't even use the fan even if it isn't directed at our block.  Just by you entering once a day to check brings in plenty of fresh air already.

Unfortunately if we are using a wood dominant substrate, we will have to really be patient and wait.

Best thing you can do for now is maximize the humidity and keep the temps as warm as possible so our pins will quickly arrive.

Okay goodluck!  :bliss:

If you have spare spawn, I say start a new tray with a new sub of mostly hummus (composted horse manure), straw pellets and verm.  Keep it thin an inch or two thick and see them definitely fruit in 3 weeks at room temperature.

awesome, thanks for the advice sarah!

the river clay was chosen because  its said that the georgia populations are usually found in red clay, and then theres a video on youtube of mass fruiting from a sheer wall of jungle landslide, looks like sandy clay.

(if you are reading this thread and have not seen the video that im referring to, video search "caerulescens derrumbe", 2min9sec, and prepare to have your mind blown!!)

the clay casing layer is thin, ~0.5"
the whole block is about 4x4x12". it is HEAVY, from soaking, like as heavy as a gallon of milk, maybe more, 8-10lbs. but solid, dense, if it were to drop to the ground, it would just thud, not break.

there is definitely some wood in this mix. ~30% wood, ~10% each of doug-fir shavings, twigs, and crushed gum balls (both from sweet gum trees). i suspect the bigger twigs might take some time to digest, myc moves right through the gum balls.

the fan is on because the space is primarily a grow room for plants, which grow much more sturdy with just a lite steady airflow.

for now, we might just put the block into a tote with a lid on, open it once each day. that will increase humidity, and can keep the fan on plants. when the pins start popping, open the tote & leave it open.

there is PLENTY of culture left. we will try some manure & straw-based mixes in the future, but bout to relocate in just a few weeks, so cant start any more projects until after. will then have much more time and resources to put toward myco projects tho...

i will not be surprised if this block starts pinning mid-move, thats the way life goes round here lol

I tried a mix of HWFP’s, wood chips, coir and pine needles a while back and didn’t have any luck.

The first time I tried @CaptainFuture’s sub recipe I was able to get a couple fruits.  I’m using 30% straw, 30% straw pellets, 30% pine shavings and 10% hpoo for sub.  2:1 sub ~ spawn ratio this go around.

Casing I’m using is just a basic potting mix with some CaCO3 added to bring the pH up to between 6 - 7 @ 1” - 1.5” thick.  I’m going to add earth worm castings to the casing on the batch that’s almost ready.  When I find them growing wild in my yard there are always earthworm mounds around and I tested the pH of the soil which is why I started adding CaCO3.

This pic is several days old and the sub is now fully colonized.  Going to case tonight!

I set my temps at 80F during the day and dropped down to 75F at night.  Humidity was set at 85%.  Think I’ll try what @saralove recommended and set it at 100% until they start to pin.

Actually have a great phenotype from one of my experiments that’s colonizing oats almost as fast as cube myc.  Again, these pics are a few days old but the jar on the left is one of my Roatan clones, right is Caerulescens.  Caeru was spawned on 5/06 and cube on 5/08.

Pics of GS from yesterday, I believe, of the Caeru jar.  Made up some more sub last night so I’ll be spawning tonight. :-)

Wood prolongs everything for this species.  I so happy when I found out on my own that they don't even need it all. :sun:

Worm castings will make our casing nutritious.  It can confuse the mycelium and we might have a tougher time with pinhead formation. But, I always say first hand knowledge is better than second hand, so definitely play and see for yourself.

Those temperatures are perfect but definitely maximize the humidity as much as you can.

put the block outside for a bit yesterday to get some natural rain water.
then put the block in tote, misted inside. also have a chakruna plant in there, think the plant needs higher humidity as well.

checked the tote this morning, all is still wet, so thats good i guess, humidity increase achieved. pins look the same.

bumped the heat up a lil in the room too.

yes, the top of the block is dry, but gets misted bout every other day, then let it dry for a day, then repeat. trying to stimulate pins by evaporation. the parts still covered by plastic stay moist
i thought the river clay would hep retain moisture, but it actually seems to dry pretty quickly, then its compact & crusty.

anyway, i think these are about pop off, just give it like one more week

Nice looking pins @splitzenkorper!  Hope you have better luck than I did getting them to fully mature.  I think mine started aborting due to inconsistency in conditions.

Rounds 2 - 4 currently in various stages:

#2 - Almost ready to case.  Thought it would be ready last night but not quite.

#3 - Spawned yesterday and recovering nicely.

#4 - First jar of indoor Caeru GS colonizing!  Started with spores from first indoor fruit on agar.

Update:

My first grow I used 6qt SB’s.  This time I used 12qt BB’s to increase the sub: spawn ratio.

Round #2:  Cased last night using regular potting mix with a small amount of CaCO3.

Round #3:  Spawned on 5/18, this is by far the best culture I have used.  Looks very healthy and is colonizing quickly.  Pics are from last night.

This phenotype actually started from an experiment I did testing Caerus resistance to mold.

Round #4:  First batch using spores from my first indoor fruit!  Spawned 5/20, starting to recover.

Made a minor change in my sub.  Last time I used 30% straw, 30% straw pellets, 20% pine shavings and 20% hpoo.  This time I used @CaptainFuture’s recipe I posted earlier.

Last time I had several things going in my GH.  This time I’m dedicating it solely to my Caerulescens so hopefully that will help reduce the number of aborts.

I have been playing with the mycelium of this Genus for a little while, only tried fruiting once and had similar problems as those above, I get a few fruit and that's it.

I realized that they will colonize over cooked oats really well, faster than if the oats were done correctly.

I noticed that the tubs I had tried to colonize indoors would contam out before pinning, but when I dumped them in the mush compost pile t;I would get a few more fruit.  With that said,  I am going to try pasteurization of some horse stall compost, red clay and sterile horse stall compost with red Georgia clay. For a casing I will pasteurize pine needles and Georgia clay at different ratios: 1:1 1:2 1:4
Pine needles/clay, I will also reverse the ratio to see what happens.

Nice!  Have you had a chance to study the spores I sent you?

I’ve been wanting to try a red clay based casing but anytime I’ve mentioned it on here I’m typically told it’s not necessary or the clay will make the casing too thick...  I’ll try something similar on one of the two boot boxes that are getting close.

Here’s Box #2 - Cased on 5/21.  Started with spores from a wild specimen collected last winter.

Box #3 - Spawned on 5/18.  Experimental culture, starting with spores from wild specimen.  Fastest colonization of oats and sub so far.

Box 4 - Spawned 5/20.  Started with spores from first indoor fruit.

Looks like mold to me.  May have some sort of bacteria as well.  The areas where the GS is touching the jar shouldn’t have that “melted ice cream” look.

Is that oats or rye grass seed?

Once the GS is colonized it’s very resistant to mold but it looks like there was either a contam in the culture or the grain may have needed to PC a while longer.

How long did you PC?

I’ve had that happen before using RGS.  Looked great then I started seeing green mold right before it was fully colonized.  Unfortunately I had to scrap it and start over..

What you could is grab a healthy looking berry with some sterilized tweezers and put it to agar.  Shouldn’t take as long to get a clean culture.

I could be wrong, maybe @saralove or @Doc9151 will have better news for you.

Hey Brain Bulb, thank you for your answer !

I PC 1h30 @ 15 PSI

It's funny because I still have my petri dish of the ISO and I don't see any contam.

No problem at all.

If the plate still looks good it’s probably your grain prep.  I always do 2 hours for grain and 4 hours for my sub.  Since I PC my oats a little longer I don’t cook them as long initially.  They’ll pick up some additional moisture during sterilization.

Happy to help anyway I can. :-)

I have one swab of spores left from my first indoor fruit.  Started from a wild specimen collected in Pickens County, SC.  To minimize risk of contaminating the spores I use sterile swabs and break it off into an Eppendorph tube that has been PC’d.

This is the fruit they came from:

Would love a P. Papuana print or swab but am open to other exotics. :-)

Thought I would offer it up here before posting in the market place.

Sorry guys holiday trip! Aendir I'm with BB on this one, definitely mold.  It may have appeared while you were gone. If you didn't see anything in the dish, it may have been in the grains.

No worries, quick redo and try again. :sun:

Thank you for the feedback BB and Saralove !

Yeah, no worries, I'll continue to isolate and try again because I the other varieties of the same grain batch are OK and I PCed 90min @ 15 PSI.

Found some trichoderma spots in one of my BB’s yesterday.  Of course it’s the tub with my best culture to date...  Fortunately I put a couple colonized grain to agar after spawning but I’m also trying to salvage the BB.

What a stately looking fruit :wowz:

How tall was it? And why isn't yours curling up, a la convexa?

All my weiliis curl up like this

And that's the second flush. My Subtropicales tend to lose the curling with later flushes but these weilii seem to keep it going.

I am beginning to think that consolidating all of the caerulescens names(villarrealiae, weilii, mazateco etc...)under one name has made identifying potential phenotypic variations more ambiguous. For example, I could have fruited villarrealiae and you could be fruiting weilii. :strokebeard:

Emm, so I finally have a colonized jar. Not sure what way to go now though. I'm soaking chopped straw / paper cat litter / verm and will mix in shop bought hpoo tomorrow.

Should I sterilize in filter bags and drop the grains in or pasteurize and then spawn in a tray? Any help appreciated.

ok heres my update folks
been super busy, about to move
the tldr= pins got eaten by slugs, block got infected, trying to save
will get more projects going after this move, have lots of LC left

ummm lets see, we put the block with the pins in a tote in increase humidity, it lasted about 3 days, then trich started blooming on top. we tried scraping it off, but it just spread.

(the top half of the block had been exposed, and well, had dried out considerably. the substrate in these parts was not well colonized or digested, whole strands of straw and woodchips still visible, compared to the thick cottony thallus that below. because the top was not well colonized, it was less able to defend against contaminants)

when it was undeniable that the trich was winning in the tote, we removed the block& put outside. scrapped off trich, which was working its way to the interior, and covered/filled the hole with unpsteurized potting soil. left the block outside for about a week, then slugs ate the pins.... so sad. it was warm for a day or two, then was cool and rainy, maybe if it was hot n humid it wouldve been better

so we took the block back inside, soaked it overnights, and it sat for another 2 weeks or so with no obvious change. yesterday, it got super swampy outside, so we decided to move the block back out. the interior of the block has gone sour, brown & soggy, but the exterior is still nice looking myc, completely colonized substrate. so we broke up the block, removed most the unhealthy parts, the very bottom was good all the way, the top now was in chunks, but we put those on top of the bottom and formed a new (thinner) block. and covered in potting soil, set on top of mulch in potted banana.

so chances are this block isnt going to make it through to the end. but am hoping that since the healthy parts are all colonized and digested substrate, and most the undigested parts have been removed, it will be ready to try fruiting again soon. and then with the swampy conditions outside, this is as close to natural habitat as we can get out here. We have gotten mexicana/atl7 to fruit outdoors in this weather, so should be possible for caerus too.

Very true.  The caps on the wild specimens I’ve collected don’t go convex either, at least not what I’ve found in my yard.  The caps are so dense that they start to split prior to opening up all the way.

That fruit was about 2.5” tall with the cap around 1” in diameter.  Not a large fruit by any means.

Speaking of which, I just found my first wild pin of the year!  Been an unusually dry/cool summer...

Whenever these Boletes start showing up the Caerulescens in my yard usually aren’t far behind.

I have one tub getting close to fruiting.  Starting to see primodia forming around the edges is the casing.  Will get some pics up soon.

Experimenting with my casing some on another tub.  Used 400g Peat ~ 50g sterilized red clay ~ 50g sterilized beach sand and a small handful of worm castings.  Guessing it was too nutritious as the casing colonized in about 4 days...

Cased on 6/06:

Checked on 6/10:

Added another casing layer of 400g pasteurized peat.  Still colonizing the casing fast.

Added a 3rd layer of CV mix I had left over from some cubes.  Should I leave it alone or try something else?

T2 from one of the clones from my first indoor fruit.

Sub is hpoo*/chopped straw/verm and casing is cactus potting soil/sand/verm

*the hpoo is a bag of shop bought composted poo though which has twigs and wood chips in it. I've not had a big lot of luck with it so far tbh, I need to find a source of au natural hpoo really

Try sifting it.  I do that with the hpoo I use.  How long are you PC’ing?  Since the gap between spawning and fruiting can be so far apart sterile technique is doubly important.

I’m by no means an expert but any sub I make with hpoo gets PC’d for 4 hours in a myco bag then I’ll let it sit for a few days before using.

Nice!  Biggest problem I’ve had is keeping away the contaminants until they fruit since they take quite a while and require high humidity.

Yeah, I was just reading through the thread and thinking about that. I have the tub in a shoe box and just been misting but might add some perlite in the bottom of it for humidity and if it's still going next week maybe a thin layer of verm.

As for contams idfk dude, it was mentioned to me that if it contaminates then dig a hole for it in the garden and bury it. See it it throws anything out. I think that may be where I'm headed lol

Found some baby Caerus coming up in my yard last night!  They’re hard to spot.

Little cluster.  Hopefully a few more come in as they mature.

Little over .5g of dried Caeru from my outdoor patch.  Going to wait til I reach at least 1g then give them a shot.

GS started with one of my experimental cultures.

I’ve never had an issue with slugs until this outdoor patch.  The area where I find them in my yard is like a mini ecosystem.  From what I’ve seen there are worms creating mounds of castings, little black ants feeding on the worm mounds that also protect the Caerus.

Noticed last night that the black ants have found my outdoor patch and some worm mounds are popping up through the potting soil.  Looks like the first untouched fruit is coming in as well.  Maybe the ants will take care of the slugs/snails.

Any suggestions? I'm waiting on my friend to get sugar came cause he said they would fruit on it like zapotecorum do and I can't wait cause I have zapotecorum too.

I would and get them on grain bc they take quite a while to colonize.  The one time I’ve had success, so far, I used @CaptainFuture’s method.  Only change I made was adding CaCO3 to bring the pH of the casing up to 6ish.

There are some experiments going with sugarcane atm so there may be something new in the works!  Looks like the hard part will be getting the SC.

Went ahead and harvested one of the wild fruits from my yard.  Cut it off just above the small fruit that’s coming in with it.  Last pin that came up got ran over by our yard guys so didn’t want to risk it.

Put the cap to print so hopefully I’ll have another print soon. :-)

This one is out of harms way I believe.  It’s being very photogenic, lol.

Lovely bacteria contaminated plate from some wild spores.  Only one so not too bad.  Still going to take at least one transfers (green arrow), possibly two (red arrow) if my hands are steady enough.

Will be the last plate I take transfers of the batch and my SAB will get thoroughly sanitized afterwards.

These Caerus don’t bruise quickly but as you can see they get dark fast when dehydrating.

T4 taken 7/04 of an indoor Caerulescens clone.  Pretty good growth for the timeframe.

T1 taken 7/04 from an outdoor print.

T3 taken 7/05 from a different clone plate.

Myco bag spawned 7/08!  Thought the GS may have been bacterial bc the oats smelled a little sour.  After shaking up the jar it smelled fine though.  Still going to keep an eye on it.  Worse case scenario I’ll add it to my outdoor patch.

Just did my A2G with 4 different phenotypes to see what happens. :-).  Will keep you posted!

How thick is your casing?  Looks healthy, but shouldn’t be colonizing like that.

Couple of mm maybe. That's not going anywhere that myc it's been like that for a good while now, so it's not really colonized it just sorta skimming it:shrug:

If you have potting soil or cactus soil those are both good.  I found a potting soil enriched with worm castings I’ll be trying soon.

Also found these coconut husk liners for planters I’m going to cut to fit the bottom of my next tub.  See if it helps with moisture..

Yeah I've cactus soil but I'm pretty sure that's the same with high peat content though but someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Would you not just use coir in your tub instead of lining it?

It does, but also has perlite and other materials that help maintain moisture levels.  Straight peat would probably be too fluffy and dry out fast.

Main reason I’m thinking about using the mat is because they’re fluffy.  Should allow for excess moisture to pass through where straight coir would just absorb it.  Also drilled 6 holes in the bottom of my tub covered with MPT so if I need to drain water I can just peel back the tape in that area of the tub.

Going to try it on my next batch to see how it goes.  Should gain some insight either way.

Ats ok I've perlite too

That's interesting about the liner. Be good to see it when it's up and running. Might steal it for my wood lovers lol

Wanted to share I’ve been keeping track of temp and humidity when I’ve found wild Caerus lately.  Looks like they prefer temps around 75 - 80F, but have found some fruits into the 90’s.  I think one of the problems I’ve been having with indoor attempts is setting my RH too high.  I’ve been setting my humidity around 95% but from my findings it looks like they prefer a lower humidity between 70 - 77%.  If the humidity breaks 80% they aren’t growing.

Mycobag spawned early morning 7/17.  Colonizing pretty quickly.

Interesting phenotype from one of my clone plates.  Can barely see the myc on the surface but there’s definitely a lot going on.

Couple more phenotypes I’m working on.

Thought this looked cool.

My last bag of sub was starting to look like it may have a bacterial contamination so I buried in my outdoor patch. :-)

New batch, trying something new.

Drilled 5 x 5/8” holes in a 20qt tub and covered with MPT. (Holes in the sides were from using the tub as a FC).

I had previously cut some of the coco liner to fit the bottom of the tub.  Placed it on top of some CV I was prepping for cubes and pasteurized.  Once cooled I put it in the bottom of the tub.

Next I took my bag of colonized sub, broke it down and spread evenly on top of the coir mat.

I put the tub on the second shelf from the bottom of my GH to reduce the amount of light it receives.  Temp is set to 80F with humidity set at 76%.  Going to let it recover then will case with organic potting soil mixed with worm castings.

Will keep you posted!

Sorry, haven’t been on here in a while.  Ended up getting trich on that batch.  I think in part bc I only pasteurized the coir mat, but could be wrong.  If you check out the “Miscellaneous Exotics” thread I’ve been posting more info there.

LMEA works best in my personal experience.  7g agar, 7g LME, 500 mL water.

Standard sub I’ve been using in 30% straw, 30% straw pellets, 30% pine shavings, 10% manure.  PC’d in a mycobag for 4 hrs.  Just got my hands on some sugarcane begasse which is supposed to be ideal sub for Caerulescens.

Love me a good thread revival. Lookin good Thekd95. Here's some current progression of some Weilii.
MEA with a drop of Karo
Transferred to brown rice
Colonized popcorn
Colonized millet
Colonized brown rice. Grain was cased with verm, coir, and GRC.

(Decided not xfer to bulk because I hear these will fruit in vitro. I figure removing that step will reduce potential contaminants and save some time. Also just want to see if this is possible. First ever grow!)

The casing layer colonized in roughly 10 days and was put into FC (90% RH, 80°F). Been there for about 20 days now.  :smoker:

Tip for the slugs: if you set some small bowls of beer around your garden, they'll find their way into there instead of hopefully munching on your mushies...seems like a fair trade?

Oh well-- I didn't have high hopes on this one-- the print was very old and dry.
The other plate I made didn't even germ at all-- fortunately I have a better one from a different source that I nocked up last week, so hoping for success there-- thanks JOC

I plucked it as soon as I got home today to get a better look. I think I did it guys. Trust me when I say I'd recognize the smell of weilii anywhere. Guess I just got my cultures confused. And growing on oats of all things too. A very happy accident indeed! This is only my second successful grow.

indoor caerulescens

Amazed by the specific smells a bit like tampanensis, also it looked like sterile spécimen when young (lamae not dark) but finally matured and release some spores, the stem took a yellowish color also during maturation compared to most other psilocybes with whiter stems..

Here's another Georgia line from last year that is being reluctant this season.

Hey yall, found this thread looking for caerulescens threads.

I've got some wild GA genetics I've been working with, finally have some good trays with good colonization/growth.

This tray here is colonized on grain then went to bulk tray with a pasteurized bag of GA red clay, pine straw, and sweetgum chips.

I'm about to move into fruiting and am going to case. What has everyone here been using? I was thinking of using a tampanensis-like casing given how the mycelium smells so much similar to it.

i think i have some caerulescens myc on agar. dropped spores in on 11/2. i have some popcorn or brown rice to spawn with and an instapot which would you all use? unless theres a way to sterilize rye berries with that instapot instead of a pressure cooker. (if this is even "weilii" myc)

I think your germ plate looks a lot like caerulescens mycelium; the instant pot will work fine for sterilizing grain on a small scale, but consider a smaller grain like millet or WBS.  You'll want to vent, and then sterilize for about 3 hours.  Here's a nice little write-up:
