Looks like white powder in center of pearl oyster fruit on rye

Just for kicks, I decided to fruit an extra rye jar alongside my straw logs, just to see how the different substrate acted.

I had good fruit, then deformed fruit, which seemed to be resolved by a fan. Next fruits have what looks like white powder in the center of the mushrooms:



The straw log right next to them is fine.

Any hints?

Spores maybe? :shrug:  I believe oysters have white spores if I’m not mistaken

I'll put them under a microscope tomorrow and look, but I have seen 0 spores so far and have had a bear of a time making spore prints.

I cut a piece off and took a picture with my new Celestron USB microscope. Toys - yay!

My theory is that this is actually the mycelium reverting to the form it takes when colonizing a substrate.



Anyone care to chime in?
