Sawdust supplements
    #24832849 - 12/07/17 10:07 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Does sawdust have to be supplemented with wheat bran or would brf work?
I want to try fruiting lions mane and reishi from the jar. Would using brf be better than no supplementing at all? Whatever I supplement with should I use verm to keep substrate loose of will sawdust be good enough. Sawdust will actually be wood fuel pellets.

I use leftover organic grain soak water.

Bran and rice are both supplements. No need to use vermiculite in conventional grows. I'm not sure about pf tek for wood lovers. I would think you could get by with out since sawdust holds adequate moisture.

Doesn't have to be supplemented you'd just get better yields.  Bran or brf would get equal yields probably

Sorry for the double post but I had an idea about this.

If you are injecting with LC instead of using grain spawn, can you simply inject a bag that has sawdust with 20% grain that has been sterilized? Would this be the same as using grains spawn to inoculate sawdust?

It is my understanding that the grains have most of the nutrients that the mushrooms use, so I am assuming that those who inoculate bags with grain don't supplement the sawdust further...?
Like if you use grain spawn to sawdust bags, is the sawdust supplemented with bran? Or does the grin act as both spawn and supplement?

Thanks and sorry if it seems like I am jacking the thread!

Supplementing allows for less spawn to be used.  What you're describing would essentially be supplementing the sawdust with grain and using zero spawn.  My guess is this is going to result in a longer colonization time than a typical spawn inoculation but should work as long as everything is clean.  Bran is a great sup for sawdust as the two homogenize very well and is cheap.

Thank you for this! That makes sense to me.

I guess I am a little trepidatious about autoclaving unsealed bags and then adding the spawn in the FH, so the LC into premixed substrate seemed like a good way to go.
I could add like 30-60 mL LC in hopes of having enough myc to get things moving at a reasonable rate.

Can I use spent coffee grounds instead of bran at 20%?

Coffee grounds aren't particularly nutritious.
