As far as I know, the thickness is determined by light, that's why they etiolate when grown in low-light conditions.
I think you grew yours indoors under a light. That's why they remain so thin. Nothing beats sunlight..

Once they grew thin they won't fatten up later. They might start growing thicker from the tip once put in more light, but etiolated /thin parts will never become what you see as a "fat" stump.

Pandamoon is right. The old growth will never thicken up. Only new growth can grow thicker.

I've seen trichos and opuntias go "droopy" before. It happened over the summer to a few of my cactus when I had surgery on my knee and couldn't water for a month. This bridgesii might also be droopy from lack of water since I'm hardening them off for the winter and haven't watered in a few weeks.

But I propped up those cactus that drooped over the summer and after a few weeks they were upright on their own again. Hopefully that happens with this one. You may want to check if your OTB can stand up on its own. You might be surprised.

If this cactus can't stay upright on its own it might be time to cut it. I'm hoping to avoid that.

I've noticed cacti pup thickness had to do with the number of pups growing off it as well, at least in containers. Not sure about in the ground.

On my original SS02 plant, I had 3 pups this year grow from it. They were all somewhat smaller in diameter. Last year, this plant only had one pup, which was nice and thick and plump.
I planted that nice thick cutting this spring and it only sprouted one pup. That thing is thick! A lot longer than the 3 I got from the original plant this last summer.

Size of arms has to do with root mass and number of pups, as well as light, water, and nutrient levels.

Oh man. I won't be in a position to have the space to give them sunlight for years. I live in Canada. I am going to upgrade my set up as a Christmas present to myself, this month. I am done with using such low watt fluorescent. My peyote seedlings look good but I don't want them to stretch. I never water them without ferts which is why they pup so insanely. But I need to do research and find out what kind of indoor lighting is best. I know nothing beats the sun but it's not an option for me. Thanks for the info.

Here's my harvest this year. 3 shelves worth of cuttings.
:hahyeahwoo: :gaydance: :cheersyoufuck:

SS02 cuttings on the left; 3 smaller cuts and 1 thick and long cut (you can see the size difference in regards to my previous post in this pic. The big cutting is actually a '4 winds' SS02  )
PC on the right. The 4 random cuts in the middle, clockwise from back left Lucy, Ogunbodede, OTB, and N1xPsycho0.

Baker 5452 on the left, then Hutchison et al 6212, then Eileen, then Huancabamba on the right.

Achuma on the left, then BK10508.1, then Kate on the right.

Some for trading, some for other uses. Should be a fun spring!!

Sorry for potato quality pics.
:derp:

Thanks Grey Fox!

I just checked out a supplier site. They have a 5" Ogunbodede cut up for auction.  Current bid is $111. I bought one off them for $45 this time last year.

I need to start the propagation of that one. Hope to have my pup rooted and growing next spring, so I'll have 2 Ogun's. I wanna try it out, but selling cuts of it seems like a viable idea also. Hopefully both of them give me many babies next growing season.

The blizzard of south Texas tried to take my trichs.  I had them under a canopy well it snowed so much the canopy collapsed. Luckily only 6 or so were broken. The rest of the 200 or so made out ok. Had me worried that most all the different trichs I've collected were squashed. Many being unreplaceable and all of them would have taken a lot if time and $ to source again.  I'm ready for the ones not fully rooted solid to be ready to put in the ground.

The 12'x20' thin piped canopy is trashed. Come march/April I'm going to build a clear roof carport/semi green house for rooting cuttings and starting seeds. So I don't have to fool with weak canopies, blazing sun, torrential rains, and whatever else mothere nature throws at me. I'm thinking about a 15'x30' ish structure to start out with and expand it as needed actual dimensions depend on lumber lengths and fiberglass panels for roof. About to be working non stop for a couple months so it will have to wait till spring until I have time to pour foundation and frame it up.

On a positive note no more burn ban so I can burn the 10 piles of trees and get more charcoal for gardens. And ground softened up some to till up a bunch more land. But no time to do it

Probably going to hire a buddy to finish tilling for the veggie garden and possible the tilling for the Great Wall of Pachanoi. When work says you wanna work everyday with 4 hours of OT each day hard to pass up that money. Selling a couple months of my soul to the chemical industrial complex=more cactus and a house.

Hope everyone's cactus makes it through the winter alright! Tomorrow I'll be drying out wet root less or little root cuttings from the snow melt and placing them in tubs of dry perlite and super coarse sand to continue rooting so they throw out fatty pups in a couple months.

What makes you believe it's a torch?

Looks more like a PC pachanoi to me with it's upward-pointing areoles.
It doesn't even have spines..?

Well, looks like a classic pach to me. Nice plant for sure, don't get me wrong.

But torches are known to have spines. Usually lots of pretty hard spines of an inch or so.
Maybe it's a short spined hybrid.. you'll never know without gettin to see the parent-plants, though.
