Demian by Hermann Hesse. 40 pages in and already hooked.

Also reading a story or two each night from Isaac Asimov's 'Buy Jupiter and other Stories'. They are typically fun reads and he gives a bit on insight after each one about how it came about/ a little background, which is interesting.

i'm reading this literature called "The Shroomery".

it's about censorship and trite hand-holding of children, who need to have rules in order not to maintain a kind of civility, but to be able to slyly insinuate people, and get them to react, thusly getting them reprimanded by other sly people, whom have more power than the rest. there is also a disturbing trend in this story, of people trying to talk about important and perhaps sensitive issues being trammeled in by heaps of moderator's messing with his account privileges, just because of wanting to talk about the kind of stultifying zeitgeist surrounding the modern cultural discourse involving Social Justice and Censorship, funnily enough.

it's a really fascinating story, but i fear that people will continue to settle for mediocrity, instead of actually having any moral backbone, to address any of the issues that are frequently occurring concerning these "disallowed" topics on the shroomery, that will get people "higher up" in the administration of this forum to police you so that you can't even speak up about anything, lest it be approved, a la something basic and maladroit.

sounds interesting.. :strokebeard:

i just finished 'The Sellout' by Paul Beatty, satirical fiction set in a former LA ghetto that is focused very much on questions of race and historical erasure.. i found it enjoyable enough reading, playfully written with broad spanning references and seemed to contain a deal of insight.. i did find the la hood environment unfamiliar being a white australian myself, and i did get the impression this was predominantly a book written by a black man for a black audience about black issues. nonetheless from what i could make of it i found it gave a lot of food for thought

I'm looking to get started on either The World Until Yesterday by Jared Diamond, or Anatomy of Terror by Ali Soufan. My favorite by Diamond is The Third Chimpanzee which a good reference for evolutionary psychology.

still reading Against The Day

this sums up alot of what the world is going through right now, gleaned from the theme of the book

[Pynchon] was apparently thinking what he usually thinks, which is that modern history is a war between utopianism and totalitarianism, counterculture and hegemony, anarchism and corporatism, nature and techne, Eros and the death drive, slaves and masters, entropy and order, and that the only reasonably good place to be in such a world, given that you cannot be outside of it, is between the extremes. “Those whose enduring object is power in this world are only too happy to use without remorse the others, whose aim is of course to transcend all questions of power. Each regards the other as a pack of deluded fools,” as one of the book’s innumerable walk-ons, a Professor Svegli of the University of Pisa, puts it. Authorial sympathy in Pynchon’s novels always lies on the “transcend all questions of power,” countercultural side of the struggle; that’s where the good guys — the oddballs, dropouts, and hapless dreamers — tend to gather. But his books also dramatize the perception that resistance to domination can develop into its own regime of domination. The tendency of extremes is to meet, and perfection in life is a false Grail, a foreclosure of possibility, a kind of death. Of binaries beware

Oh hey I know that one! Kinda sucks, a bummer because it had so much potential in the earlier chapters.
