Can you freeze mycellium?

I always wondered about this. Let say someone has a tub ready to grow but suddenly has to leave for 2 weeks. Can you just freeze it and then thaw it when you come back and still get mushrooms to groww on it as if it was never frozen? Or will it die?

It will most likely die. Water will freeze into sharp crystals, rupturing each cell from within.

Some species survive the winters up north, so I would assume some could be frozen.

It would be interesting to see. Is anyone willing to try this?

This is a good point. I was assuming he meant P. Cubensis but he didn't specify.

My hypothesis is that some mycelium will survive, but the majority will die and become a cesspool very quickly, contaminating horribly before any fruits pop.
Edit: I typed more before that but it must have deleted. I have a couple extra grain jars. I can make a shoebox and freeze it after it colonizes to see what happens.

why not just throw into the fridge instead of freezing?
Wrap it in a bag with a few micropore holes for GE, it will come back much easier than if you were to try freezing it.

I've put jars in the fridge that I didn't have time to do anything with before leaving town for a while. I have a mini fridge that just has one of those little freezers thats not in a separate area just a little area in the top on the fridge. I dont know the best way to describe it hah, but some of my jars on the top shelf were too close to the freezer and the top grains froze but the bottoms did not. The myc died where it froze but once I took them out of the fridge the living myc recolonized the grains that had frozen and died. Ive never tried freezing a whole jar. What happened to mine was unintentional. I dont know what would happen with a tubs but i would imagine it would take to long to recolonize?

A user named 'morelman' recently froze some spawn jars to test if they would survive. He plans on making the spawn jars experience all the seasons in a way, so he's frozen them for a few months and then he's going to put them in the fridge for a few months to simulate spring.
