I'm too dumb to figure out how to program the PID controller i put together though but it still works with a pyrometer and harbor freight variable router switch.

That's pretty cool. I'm pretty interested in metal casting as well just no time for it yet. My heating source is tig welding wire I coiled and connected a 120 volt cord to.

PID is a nasty creature because the formulas are very simple, but tuning the system can be frightful. PID without a PhD is my go to reference for beginners. It's accessible and very informative.
Long version from the author's website: http://wescottdesign.com/articles/pid/pidWithoutAPhd.pdf Shorter and probably earlier version from a random site: http://manuals.chudov.com/Servo-Tuning/PID-without-a-PhD.pdf

Mine is nichrome wire I coiled which is just tig welding wire. I just connected an old 120 volt extension cord to that. Some professional kilns use the same set up. I could've bought a pre coiled element for like 100 bucks or something instead I made my own and an extra whenever this one is done for 30 bucks of wire and an old power cord.
I used k 26 brick which just means it can go to 2600 farenheight. I've had this kiln up to 2000 farenheight with this set up before.
