TempestDnB said: Damn those are probably definitely ovoids. That is a crazy fall flush! Nobody here has had any luck with them this fall. Everyone had pretty much given up on a fall flush of ovoids this year.. which makes this find so strange.. This could be a first for something else. Much love from a fellow Pennsylvanian! I don't see any galerina by the way. Do they have a strong smell to you? Almost like the smell of cubensis? And you say the spores are a chocolatey purple? How long have you lived there? Did you recently move in and just notice this? Or have you lived there for years? It could have been a patch of a different psilocybe that the previous resident put in. Macroscopically they are different from ovoids I've seen, but ovoids vary greatly in their morphology. They have especially unique phenotypes in Pennsylvania.
They smell like cubensis, and choclately-purple is a very good color descriptor for the spore print. I'm a new resident and noticed them a little over a week ago. Haha I really like the idea that the previous resident made a patch.. Would you say that's more likely than a natural occurrence? The substrate has spread beyond the mulch but that's where the majority of the fruits are.

Yo don, thanks for your reply! Do you also think they are P. Ovoideocystidiata? A confirmation from a mythical TI would keep my mind at bay.
I'm super grateful for your help, guys I'll take them for a spin this weekend, and I'll make sure to let you know the results!

I messaged koods about it, he thinks they're ovoids. Just make sure they all bruise blue to be safe.
Be careful woodlovers can be quite paralyzing

OP is one lucky dude to find fall ovoids in his backyard lol
Fall is galerina season, so make sure you check each one for blue bruising and toss any that you aren't sure about.

For sure triple check them I fucked up and had to find out the hard way I ate 3 grams about 3-4 months back of ovoids I had picked and had a good trip but on the come down it got deathly ill. I did find a few that had some green mold on them cause I didn't have a dehydrator at the time. I tossed the moldy ones but I literally felt like I was going to die so I dumped over 40 grams down the toilet the next day. I hated to do it but was not taking thoat chance again I am still not sure if I had a gale finial or if it was from mold or something. But great find man I miss the taste of ovoids I would take ovoids over cubes any day

Galerina don't make you sick like that. It makes your liver fail, days after you ingest them. Definitely the mold or something.

It is possible, although none of those samples really look like galerinas. To be safe, take a print of each sample (and then mail out the prints to cultivators on this site!!!)
Also, keep that patch going! Get some alder wood chips and do some outdoor cultivation from those spores. With some love, I bet you could turn that (albeit quite impressive) garden patch into a mushroom forest!

Sure, it's possible. But you don't get sick right away after eating something like a galerina. I think everything in that guy's patch was an ovoid. As long as his samples are bruising blue, they shouldn't be galerinas. That's why we tell people to throw out the ones that don't bruise blue, so you don't have to spore print each and every one of them. These are psilocybes, not pan cinctulus.
I don't know why I'm arguing with you, I apologize. I'm not very good at judging things at the moment. Probably shouldn't be on this forum that I love, making a fool of myself with rhetoric.

We don't have alder on the east coast. Maple and box elder, oak, bamboo, sycamore, beech are all good woods.

Yessir! I got the recipe from another ovoid hunter. It actually tastes good, as opposed to gyms by themselves, which taste like hobbit scrotum.

Many many many thanks to all who helped identify these bad boys. I bit the bullet, and they are definitely psilocybe Had a beautiful experience the other day! I still can't get over the coincidence of this, like the vast majority of people in my area wouldn't even touch psychoactive mushrooms let alone pick them.. And there's a "motherload" within arms reach! The odds seem infinitesimally small.

I know this is probably the wrong board to ask, but what do alder wood chips do? And how does one "do outdoor cultivation" from those spores?
Thanks a million!

You need to add more food to keep that patch going. When those are done fruiting, cover the patch with an inch or two of hardwood chips (not pine). Square chips are much better than shredded. Then cover that layer with grass clippings and dead leaves.

Yeah don't get hung up on the specific type of tree being chipped. Pretty much any hardwood will do and actually probably a mix of types will work best. Other things you can throw in the mix are coffee grounds, pistachio and walnut shells, sweet gum seed pods, bamboo, toothpicks, wooden stir rods for coffee, paper egg cartons. and corn cobs.
I really think a little straw or grass mixed in with the mulch really speeds colonization as it can act like highways for the myc to spread out. I believe stilt grass in the natural habitat almost as important as woody debris and have noticed that ovoids usually like areas where the mulch meets grass.
