How long can you keep a petri dish with a fruit (or two) on it?
    #24821729 - 12/02/17 06:19 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

I started working with agar a couple months back, had some clearly contaminated plates and threw those out but there were two I wasn't sure about.  Let them be for a while, now they're both completely colonized and one has two small mushrooms (already dumped spores).  I haven't opened them up, just put them in the fridge til I can make some pasty plates.  How long will they be OK like that?

I was hoping I could keep it refrigerated for a few weeks.

Ever seen a mushroom last a few weeks under refrigeration? I haven't. I would give it a few days max

Just dry it and rehydrate later

OP is talking about agar plates, not harvested mushrooms.

They should be fine in the fridge for a couple of weeks, but you really shouldn't be taking transfers from plates that overgrown, and the mushrooms will be too decomposed to clone. If that is all you have to work with though, they should be fine to take transfers from after you get plates made.  You may have contaminates you can't see ride along.

Agar plates do dry out though, so you don't have much longer to transfer.

A plate with a mature mushroom on it would likely go bad quicker than if the mushroom was harvested imo

I had kept a colonized petri dish in my fridge for 4 months, it had small fruits on it, but was fine when I put it to grain.  Not sure if thats standard practice, but I am learning.

Okay but you said the mushroom dropped spores so any wedge you take is going to have spore exposure. Not saying it won't be alive but you'll be kinda starting back at ms.

Actually I had two plates, only one of them fruited and I used the one that didn't.  Now I have a nice clean liquid culture.
