recent police encounter left me uneasy
    #24818339 - 12/01/17 06:10 AM (6 years, 5 months ago)

So I was driving cross country and I was going through indiana at like 11 oclock at night. I had the whole back of my jeep filled with shit and I had my dirt bike on the back of my car covering my license plate. Well I get pulled over (after driving like that since las vegas mind you) and immediately the cop said he smelled weed. I denied it, than he goes look if you tell me where it is, we don't care about a little amount of weed, but if you make me search this car you are going to jail. Idk, but something about that kind of spiteful laziness hit me and I admitted to having marijuana and told him where it was. It was about a gram or so, not much.

So he cuffs me, puts me in the front seat of his car. Gets on his personal cell phone and calls a buddy I guess, cause another cop showed up. They went over to get the weed while I sat in the cop car. Well they immediately find it and start walking back, but with two mason jars. One was the pot, the other was my DMT. So I immediately go, oh shit.

They go to the back of the car put the stuff there talk to each other for a second than open the door, talk to me about visibility and loading and about safety, than let me go.

I go into my car, sure enough my dmt is not in the bag it was in. So the cops definitely took it. Its freaking me out, what if they smoke it and freak out than call the state police of the state i am currently in? Idk the whole thing is weird and causing me panic attaacks

I think you will be fine, but you got off really easy.  I guess they just didn't feel like making a drug arrest.

Indiana is not known for lenient weed laws. Indiana is known for being pretty much the Alabama of the Midwest.

Count your lucky stars, and pray you don't get a subpoena at the address listed on your license.

They took your stuff because they wanted it. You got robbed. They aren't going to vaporize some unknown white crystal and then call the cops on themselves.

This comes with some benefits and some costs. Benefits are mostly for the tinfoil hatters, the people paranoid about the government spying on them. The costs are that if you get a subpoena and never receive it because your address is out of date, that's on you. Happened to a buddy of mine, ended up getting his bail raised a bunch because he missed the first court date when the papers were sent to an old address.

Also if you get an automated speeding or red light ticket and you never get it because you don't get mail at that address, you could have your license suspended and not know, which is a good way to get busted.

Theycprobably couldnt fogure out what it was so they couldnt pop you for it, but they could tell it was drugs so they figured theyโ€™d keep it to take some money out of your pocket. Probably in a trashcan or ground into the dirt nearby.

Those were government sanctioned thieves.  They wanted to do your drugs or sell them.  Either way, you have nothin to worry about.

Because you weren't drunk and carrying weapons.  That happens around here too.  The police would rather tell a bunch of stoners to go somewhere else than waste time booking them while some drunk guys start shooting at each other.

Furthermore, having a bad/old address on file, while you also have potential/pending court stuff is fairly risky, because at a certain point you can become subject to arrest at any time you encounter the police. This happened to me many moons ago.

I had a ticket for a traffic incident that I completely forgot about, which of course then went unpaid. I then also missed the court date which you're supposed to show up for, if you don't pay / contest the ticket. After which a warrant was issued for my arrest. And for some reason, not only did they not have my most recent address, but the address they had for me was a place I hadn't lived in YEARS. So I didn't get any info in the mail saying I had to show up for court (or that I'd failed to show) and I was oblivious to all of it.

This led to a rather unpleasant experience where one day the police ran my info, and had to arrest me because of the warrant. And unfortunately I had a small amount of pot on me at the time. So this actually led to my one and only drug charge-- all because I forgot about a traffic ticket, and the court didn't have my current address.

That's... not how cops work at all, 99.9% of the time. If the cops find a substance during the course of a search which they suspect to be drugs, but cannot confirm to be drugs, they will often let the person go, but confiscate the substance and send it out for testing. Then when the results come back, they can issue an arrest warrant, if they want. There is nothing saying they have to arrest you on the spot for drug possession.

(Sometimes, however, they will arrest you on the spot for mere suspicion, if their hunch about the substance is strong enough, or a crappy field test says it may be controlled. This leads to fun news headlines about people being arrested for possession of cat litter, or breath mints. But sometimes they just confiscate and contact you later.)

Unfortunately, this has happened plenty of times.

I have never really had issues with police. The one time I got busted they saw me sell weed in a parking lot even then I almost got away with it because I had a reasonable explanation and they almost over looked where I kept it.

Even that wasnt so bad. I can usually get away with small lies and have had a few police encounters tripping, i just view them as a mind game i can usually win.

I've had multiple encounters with the police since this has happened and I have been let go. One of them was for a suspected breaking and entering (I work as a pizza delivery driver part time and went to the wrong house.. so the home owner called the cops)
