Video: G2G Transfers In SAB 15
#24813567 - 11/29/17 03:20 AM (7 years, 1 month ago) |
|
|
Here's a quick video of how I perform G2G transfers in my SAB. All jars were wiped down once outside of the SAB and once again inside before filming. I'm used to expanding to 6 jars and went a bit light on these by accident. However, I do purposely leave some grain in the masters to sniff after.
Mistakes:
- One minor mistake I make is moving a jar out of the line barehanded from the bottom without wiping my hand before I touch the jar. I usually grab jars by the tops with the iso-towel, whoops. Not a major fuck up, but worth fixing.
- I shouldn't wipe down the master jar without securing the lid better. I usually place my index on the SFD and wipe around the rim. In the sped up intro you can see it popping open slightly twice.
Please drop any comments, especially advice or helpful criticism. While I have a very good G2G success rate, I can always get better.
Cheers!

This is a nice video.
I like the hanging paper towel to clean your index and thumb before unscrewing the jar and how your right hand only holds the master jar.

Yep. That's the name of the game. Don't fill your SAB too much, remove jars if necessary and re-sanitize your hands, make slow, controlled movements.

Look at stare go! From asking 4826475849264 questions to making instructional videos. Nice touch with the iso soaked paper towels over the receiving jars.

Haha thanks. I think I saw TranscendingLife do that and thought it was a nice touch. Don't worry, I still ask 38753875375 questions. Shit, this video was supposed to be me asking how my technique is. I'd feel swell if it was solid enough to help others!

Quick observation: the lids are actually never touching. Like TL's video its hard to tell from a top down angle.
When practicing i grab the master jar about knuckle level then recipient jar at the finger tip. It does take some practice.

Yeah, my lids never touch. I have the master lid in my thumb and index and the receiving lid between my thumb middle and thumb. The master is a bit higher up on the thumb to provide space between. Keeping both lids over one another in the same space, both pointing down, with minimal movement is also great, IMO.
It's worthwhile to practice a bunch outside of the SAB. I'll take another video with a different angle for a different technique sometime.

Thanks. Yeah, if your grain doesn't move around smooth like that, you may have a prep issue. However, I start with my grain right against the lid from tilting the jar upside downs, so that helps. I also twist instead of shaking (a la RR) which is a smoother motion. These are oats FWIW.

Useing oats myself. They break up just not as smooth as yours. I think it would be a good idea for me to practice outside the box awhile first

I was wondering about the towel in the bottom of the sab. Do you soak it with anything? I always set up on a smooth table i can sanitize but the jars do slide around ( and scratch the shit out of the table ) so if a soaked towel will work id use that just didnt know how to sanatize it properly

For sure, practice makes perfect. I use eat's oat prep tek which is about as simple as it gets. Give your grain the toilet paper test before placing into jars and your grain should be as smooth as mine. Give it a shot and if there's still trouble, make a thread detailing your process.

Nope, it's just a clean towel with tap water I wring out. I'm not too concerned with it being sanitary; it provides a non-slippery platform. A clean SAB is secondary to solid technique. Remember, your success depends on the principle of still air, not sterility.
I do very little for SAB sanitation. I'll wipe the inside and outside with iso before I spray with soapy water. After a session, I'll wipe down the outside again with the used paper towels before tossing them. If I'm using the SAB within the next day or so, I'll just cover the holes with a clean towel and tuck them under.

I've switched back to eat oat prep myself. Kept getting over hydrated all the other ways. I'm sure it was me or something. But yeah eats. Hard to fuck it up.

My method is to soak the towel with bleach at a strength such that it only stings my eyes a little. This creates a static cloud of chlorine that I operate within in which no tiny microbes will have a chance.

I like the twisting the master as you transfer like how wine should be poured. I tended to shake my masters a tiny bit to make more grains fall out. Can't believe I didn't think of this myself.

It only takes doing that once (I did it ) to know not to do it ever again. It's not only your eyes that stings, I had breathing difficulties for hours after that and a horrible sneeze attack that wouldn't quit.

The bleach seems unnecessary at best and very bad at worst. I'd never do something to irritate my eyes ever, much less when I need to see what I'm doing. But I'd prefer this thread stay on G2G technique.

Nice work
That's a technique I saw RR do in his videos. I don't think he overturned the master to bring grains to the top, though, but someone else probably did that before me that I saw. The overall trick is controlled, smooth motions. In my opinion, both aforementioned techniques help with that goal immensely while shaking does not (although I'm guilty of it when the jar is low sometimes).

Hey Stare, would you mind if I link this tek in my LC thread? I had a link to transcending life's vid on how to G2G as an example on how to pour LC, but his technique is rather sloppy compared to yours.

It'd be cool if there were a video with the plastic lids. I am using a media bottle with LC in it to pour into the plastic lids. In the past I just took the lid off and poured it into each jar without putting the lid back on. It seemed pretty safe to me because I pour plates all the time with no contams.
This time I figured I'd try grabbing both lids like you do with the metal ones in this video but it was pretty awkward. I think it was not my best work. The other good G2G videos that I could find are using the metal lids.

Please don't run through old threads providing zero substance just to boost your post count. If you have no contributions, at least ask solid questions so your bumps wind up making the threads more useful. You'll have enough posts to get in the marketplace soon enough, woman.

I'm not sure what you mean by grinding the grain? I simply turn the master jar upside down and back. This gets the grain stockpiled on the rim of the master so the actual transfer has less movement. The name of the game is to be as smooth and controlled as possible when you have open containers. Purposeful technique is much more important than speed and the former influences the latter anyway.

Nice video, I'm not nearly this careful I move way faster when I go about it. Quick wipe Down jars with iso then I just leave the lid off the master while I open each recieving jar to dump a little in. I do 10 jars in like 5 minutes not saying my way is better or recommending it but I haven't had 1 contam out of probably the last 200 ive done.

Thank you for this video. I am a rookie and wondering what type of grain you prefer? Iโve heard all kinds at this point but wondering what works best for you without contams.
Thanks in advance for your answer.

I'm not sure why bleach is being trash talked. If you use it at a normal diluted sanitary ratio of 1:10 (not full retard strength) it will be just as effective as ISO. During this current COVID situation it's become extremely hard to get ISO, so to save it I've resorted to using bleach water when its appropriate. Diluted bleach soaked paper towels would be a good alternative I would think?
