Trying to grow lion's mane

Hi everyone
I've been trying to grow lion's mane, with very little success. I buy a small bag of spawn, and have tried a few different ways of growing.
1. I put grains to agar, but it doesn't seem to grow. 2. I G2G the spawn into WBS or oats. I then spawn the jars to sterilised bags of sawdust/bran, but in a SAB as I don't have a flowhood. This has only resulted in infection. 3. Sometimes the lion's mane pins in the jars. I've let some of these grow out, with the lids on I think, but the yield is miniscule. These are the only fruits I've managed to grow though.
I've just ordered some more spawn and am planning to do the following, and would appreciate any feedback ...
1. G2G into jars of oats. 2. Once the jars are colonised, spawn into coir/verm in plastic tubs with micropored holes in the lids to breathe through. 3. Take the lids off and fruit in SGFC.
I suppose my main questions are: a) Is this a viable method? b) Would I be better to just top-fruit the jars in SGFC?
Many thanks.

Lions mane can fruit through very small holes. It would probably be better to keep them in the jar than take them out. I have only fruited them in bags with only 2 1/4" holes in each bag, and the fruits poke through the holes and grow pretty big.

Thanks my_mycelium. Great to know they can fruit from small holes.
I guess what I'm most wondering is, do I have any chance of success if I spawn to non-sterilised substrate (coir) in an non-sterile environment (SAB at best)? If not I'll just fruit from the jar in a SGFC.

Lions mane is not very aggressive. IMO would not be a good candidate.

What sort of infection are you getting? Mold or bacteria?
If mold, try lower bran content and add some lime to substrate. If bacteria, lower water content.
Lions mane is a bit tricky. You need to use the spawn AS SOON AS IT'S COLONIZED. In my experience, LM goes into fruiting stage very quickly and then looses its vigor to colonize new substrate.
Are you mixing the spawn into the bag and does the bags have enough air exchange?

I would suggest adding some hardwood sawdust to your subtrate mix, I don't know how well LM will do on coir.
Perhaps use some of the spawn you bought directly into substrate and see if that produces anything.
I grow my Lions Mane on Lime pasteurized wheat straw with no bran or sawdust. Yields are decent but I always feel like I could have gotten more were the substrate sawdust and supplemented for the size of bags I use. But this is a quick, low cost method so I don't really mind.

Thanks BlueDisa. Ah so you're spawning into a non-sterilised substrate (pasteurised straw). In that case I'll try some on coir as I guess it'll be pretty similar. Even if the LM can't get much nutrition from the coir, I guess it should have enough from the grain for one flush.
Thanks also for pointing out the necessity of spawning as soon as it's ready. So far I've found it really difficult to figure out when that is. Is it good enough to go with when the first white bits start to appear?
I only tried the sterilised bags once and they somehow got infected with fungus gnats, so something went quite horribly wrong there! Not quite as much of a noob now, but still a noob when it comes to LM.
I'll try a few different things then. Probably try some straw too after what you said, so cheers for that!
Quadman, thanks for the advice. I'll have a go anyway, as I've already got this spawn coming, but if it doesn't work this time, I'll just buy some LM extract!

So is it possible to grow LM using lime pasteurization? I remmember watching a video that said the LM don't like the high pH using this method.. It would be great for me, but didn't try it yet. I use hardwood sawdust + wheat bran (20%).
