Few questions about monotubs and increasing yield.
    #24794816 - 11/20/17 01:47 AM (6 years, 4 months ago)

Hello fellow mycologists and hobbyists alike! Me and my wife recently had success with our first grow ever! Heck yeah!
Using damions elementary 50/50 coir tek, we spawned a 1:3 ratio of spawn:substrate to bulk monotubs designed with 2 holes on each of the longer sides and singular holes on the short sides (ohmatic).
Onto the questions:

How do you promote a nice, healthy and even pinset? In our excitment we forgot liners in our tubs which increased side pins. In result i believe this may have affected my pinset? It was consistent around the edges,(microclimate) but rather vacant in the middle of my sub. Any thoughts on how to prevent side pins other than the obvious liner?

Is there a special way you guys place your FAE holes in your tubs to encourage proper air exchange ? Is 6 enough ? I worry using anymore would dry my sub out faster before the first flush.

Speaking of subsrates, other than adding gypsym to damions 50/50 is there anything else in addition that would increase the nutritional value for my spawn?

And lastly, does flush effect potency? Ive read a lot of mixed answers on this, being  the first flush would be the most potent, or that the later flushes are more potent?

Try to get some pictures up. A liner doesnt stop side pins. It can help though.

I would think your describing a sub with poor surface conditions. Cant really ne certain without seeing it though.

From my experience potency is not determined by what flush its on.

Ditch the liner from what i hear.  If surface conditions are optimal you won't need a liner.  You could add spent coffee grounds to your substrate for a little extra nitrogen but the main thing is water.  Shrooms are 90-93% water and nothing's going to help more than keeping the sub hydrated.

Liners help with side pins. But they're absolutely unnecessary. Good sirfacd Conditions and practice stop side pins

Hole location doesn't really seem to matter at all. People have tried deciphering the physics and making diagrams and models but it really doesn't matter.

Don't worry about nutrition. Its already overly nutritional.

No, genetics effect potency. Get into agar work if you want any consistency

That's what I'm looking for.  My side pins are out of control.  But I'm going to continue doing them without a liner to learn to get my surface conditions dialed in.

its easier than you think. even doing open air. side pins are like, not an issue.

but sometimes they happen no matter what.

Thanks guys! Ill try and get some pictures up when i get back from work.
How exactly do you promote quality surface conditions for my fruit? Adding more water during pasturization process?
Would putting wax paper on top of my sub provide a nice microclimate to achieve healthy surface sub?
As you guys can tell im still very new to this lol

If your holes are stuffed properly that should provide a good climate unless your monotub is a rediculous size, which I'd assume it isn't. If you're having problems maintaining it then yes wax paper can help, but with a properly dialed in mono that shouldn't be necessary.

Them what the hell am I doing wrong?  My substrate isn't drying out or anything.  Am I maybe over watering?

If you zoom in you can see then bursting at the seams with side pins.
I was thinking to high of a spawn ratio could be an issue.  Those box's were 1.5 wbs to 1.5 coir.

The top pinset could be more even so work on that. Then you might find your sidepin problem going away

How do I work on it? It's ms is that the issue? Or are my conditions off and that's the problem?

Yes, your conditions are off. Your surface humidity is too low.

this is how i have do it.

i gingerly but evenly press down my freshly spawned totes. apply unpacked top layer of substrate
once colonized to a degree, like 50% or whatever i give a soaking mist.
lid comes off. lid stays off until the top layer is slightly dry.(or flipped lids if you cant helicopter parent the totes)

mist just to keep that top layer moist. let it dry out a bit before misting again..(the top layer).. mist and repeat until pins come in.
then i still mist the pins until they are about an inch tall and i can see the pin set. i leave alone and bottom water if needed. misting just to keep it moist but thats really all.

i dont have side pins. but it still takes practice. my biggest thing is i do not want the substrate to pull away from the tote.
that means im letting it dry out waaay to much. i need the substrate mass to retain its volume mass/shape? while water evaporates.

Excellent post man.  I see what your saying.  I haven't been adding a top layer ill start now.  My sub shrinks but I've been keeping it very hydrated.

I deff helicopter those bitches!

thats just a brief run though and its just what ive kinda always done.  the sub will shrink once that flush comes.
and who cares about side pins after the 1st flush? shrooms are shrooms at that point.

oh and the size of the tote or substrate doesnt matter. what ive been focusing on is keeping the substrate
from shrinking before the 1st flush and keeping the tub kinda moist but always 'drying out' and replenishing with moisture.

some people can do that with set and forget tubs like pasty but something about doing it open air, no liner no side pins is kinda bad ass.

Are you fruiting after spawn or are you taping your holes up and letting it colonize for a week first?

You may find your subs surface drying out if you fruit to early.
Nothing a little misting cant fix though.

Check out the link in my signature "caring for your monotub"
It will give you a rundown on surface conditions and how to maintain proper moisture without using crazy things like wax paper.
In that write up I also do a grow log showing exactly how I prepare and care for my monotubs right up till harvest time.

Don't be let on to thinking that using a liner is a crutch. A liner is a useful tool to prevent side pinning and also helps with cleaning up spent substrate.
