Using a plastic bag will help prevent this.  As the mycelium colonizes, it contracts slightly.  It will partially pull a plastic bag in along with this contraction, preventing the humidified gap between the mycelium and the plastic wall, which provides a great micro-climate for pins to form.

I recommend buying a painters tarp from a store like Lowe's or Home Depot.  They are large, flat, thick pieces of plastic which can easily be shaped to whatever plastic bin you are using.  They are pretty cheap, easy to cut yet wont tear easily.  It will shrink with the mycelium creating a nice compact wrap hopefully pushing all pins to the new ideal surface -- the top!  Not to be confused for a regular tarp however, as that would be much to thick and hard to cut.

Black plastic sheeting for the win.

Used to no-liner to save on costs and work with set up, but had constant problems with side and bottom pins. Noww always use liners and never have any more problems

I feel like clear plastic liner FTW.  Same idea except it allows you to see growth and progress through the sides and bottom.  Still a noob, but thats my humble opinion.

Improve your surface conditions, and you will get less side pins. a liner doesnt prevent them.

Liners do work to stop side pins.
Light doesn't cause them, so a clear liner is the same as a black one.

You don't need a liner to stop side pins

Correcting your surface conditions and they'll pin on top before they pin on the side.
