ID Request - Found in Dune Grass
    #24792004 - 11/18/17 06:15 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

I have two different samples, both where growing in the same habitat.

Sample 1:

Sample 2:

Habitat: Growing amongst dune grass in mid November on the coast just north of the Columbia river delta. My phone battery was dead so I have no pictures of them in the wild.

Gills:

Sample 1

Sample 2

Stem:
Both samples have fibrous, hollow stems. See pictures at top of post for visual characteristics. The colors all look pretty much the same in the pictures as in life.

Spore print color:
Not sure what color this is. Dark brown in a lit room. Very light brown, almost tan-pink and slightly iridescent under a flashlight.

Sample 1

Samples 2

Bruising:
Black, brown, grey and a very slight gray-blue at the very base of the stem on both samples.

Other information:
Scent is mild: earthy, but clean.

Really? Which sample? That is what I was looking for, but I though azzies where supposed to stain blue like mad.

I took some more prints on white paper to be safe.

Sample 1

Sample 2

They definitely look purple to me. Pyrolight thinks they are Azurescens (thanks a ton for the response btw) and I am inclined to agree with him, but the lack of blue bruising is concerning. Like I said above, there is a VERY slight blue tinge at the very base of the stem, but everywhere else they bruise black and brown. Also, the stem on sample 2 seems kind of dark for azurescens.

If they are Arurescens, then these are my first actives =)

I'd like to eat them soon so I don't have to dry them, but I would like to be as sure as possible that they aren't galerinas or some other potentially toxic genus. I know galerinas have a brown print rather than purple, but I'm not totally confident telling purple-brown apart from regular brown.

Any TIs around? or just anyone with experience who can give a second opinion?

Thanks for the replies. Are you saying that both samples are azurescens? They look pretty different to me.

Bumping in hope that a TI will see this. I am fairly confident that they are p. azurescens, but they are my first ever actives so I want to be absolutely certain. Also, here is one more sample that I found in the same location. It looks quite different than the other six, and the print is less of a lilac brown and more of a black becoming chocolate brown when I shine a light on it. However, it bruises blue much more than any of the samples in my OP.

I didn't get any shots of it in situ or even within the first couple hours after picking it, because the blue staining was not apparent when I picked it and I didn't think it had the potential to be active

Thoughts?

Also, Galerina spores have a rusty-orange tint to their brown-ness.

They are very easy to tell apart from Psilocybe species and your prints are clearly purple-hued.

No need to wait any longer.

Nice finds.
Just a tip for next time your in the identification situation. You can take a picture with the mushroom, gills and habitat in one shot. Then you have the general criteria to get an id covered. Lots of times the spore color will be apparent on the caps  and stems of other mushrooms. Then when your spore print is done you can compare. Helps to hone your id skills as well. Remember this was just a suggestion, nothing more nothing less.
Welcome.

Thanks! I spotted pic related in the woods today but haven't gotten around to collecting samples yet. I will try your format for an ID request later tonight.

Sulphur tufts with waxy, brown, wavy caps? I am very new at this, but those do not look like Hypholoma fasciculare to me at all.

Yeah I did notice a green tinge to them. I am impressed that y'all can see it in the picture though. I definitely noticed it in person, but I can't see it in the photo.

So do Hypholoma fasciculare develop a flat or concave cap when they mature fully? All the pictures I have seen have had convex caps.

Thanks to both of you! I have been learning a lot from your posts.

I've seen them curl up like cyanenscens! Convex is just the most typical image you'll see of them, mature and sporulating by that point.

I think either allenii or azurescens.  I only say azure due to location that they were found. I am no trusted identifier

Tahoe, are you saying that if we didn't know the habitat or knew it to be elsewhere, you would suggest allenii?

I've never seen such pronounced umbos on an allenii, but I'm still learning to ID azzies.
