Depression runs in my family, should I be worried?
    #2478607 - 03/27/04 07:27 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I have wanted to try Shrooms for awhile now and I should be getting some in about two weeks. Just this morning I realized that my mother, father, aunt, and cousin have all suffered from depression. I know my parents both take medication for it.

I don?t suffer from depression, at least not to the extent my other family members do. Should I worry about tripping with this history of depression in my family? I know my dad used to do acid when he was younger and he does currently take Zoloft I believe.

I can get scared pretty easily, that is why I can?t stand horror movies, but I am so excited and looking forward to tripping that I?m willing to deal with the possible fear. I?m planning on taking special care with my set and setting, and I?ll only be taking 1.5g my first time.

My best friend Steve, which I love dearly and trust my life with, will be watching over me. I think I?m up for it, I just know it is going to be such a beautiful experience. I have spent weeks reading everything from trip reports to all the effects imaginable. What do you guys think?

Thanks,
ShroomNoob03

In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion.

I think it would be better if you had a friend do it with you so you can share your experience together and you won't feel so "alone". 1.5 will be a good starting dose for you. You sound like you have done your research and aren't going in unprepared. That is the most important thing! As long as you don't have any problems right now like a fight with a friend, unpaid bills, or family problems you should have a great time. Make sure to get lots of music that you enjoy and maybe something new like classical or jazz. Have fun!!!

i think as long as you keep on the positive side, depression wont set in. its when you start to worry, thoughts race, and you get paranoid about this kind of stuff. just relax and let it flow. dont rush the experience, when you feel ready for it, go for it. i think youll be fine. the set and setting is key. make sure you are more than comfortable about where you are and who you are with. and when i feel uncomfortable or a bad trip may be coming on, a change of enviorment seems to work wonders. i always think that when im tripping, and it actually works.

Yep, just keep it positive.  You're experiencing something that actually very few people have the pleasure to.  Enjoy the experience to its fullest.

Yes, I've suffered from chronic depression all of my life, and as long as I'm in a good spot my trips range from good to magical.

I have found that a change in music can alter my trip immensely. If you feel like you are thinking about the wrong things try putting on some uplifting music. I listened to Jimi at Woodstock and The Smashing Pumpkins to bring me out of a funk before and I can recommend them both.

"Depression runs in my family, should I be worried?"

Certainly. Take care they all don't decide too visit you at the same time round Christmas.
Fucking nightmare! Everyone sitting around complaining about their problems. Staring at their feet and mumbling into the curtains. Pish on that. Be afraid. Be very afraid.*

*That was a joke BTW, mate, no worries. But I could'nt let that one get by me. I've had a hard day at work and that litle quip just cheered me right up. Thanks.

depression is easily trigered by any drug-it may not happen but if it does you got youreself a lifelong companion.my family has the same problem(manical depression)but it did not stop me.if you are gonna take them be cool and happy and do it with some good friends.and have diazepam yust in case it gets too intense.it wont kill the trip,it will make it nice and groovy
