ok I made a huge batch and tried to somehow calculate making enough to fill my sterilizers and trying to figure out how much dry grain per brick of coir to make a 1:1 ratio mixture once hydrated.

I will see how well I did in a little bit.

Is it best to do 1:1 grain and coir ratio? or less grain?

Going to be trying the just oat and coir recipe tommorrow and I am not sure how much water to use or the best way to prep it.

Would you hydrate the grain and the coir separately or would you pour the pot of boiling grain into the coir like how the op recipe describes?

AND is there an easy way to figure out how much water is needed for said amount of grain to boil/hydrate and just add an extra gallon for hydrating the coir?

Any suggestion/info on the subject would be greatly appreciated so I know I'm going about this right.

Just go about your normal grain, and coir prep technique, mix them together, and place them in the bags once completed, then sterilize.

This but I'd still use the water from the grain prep to hydrate your coir.

next Time....

this time I went with just straight bucket tek'd coir and oats steeped for 30 min and drained and rinsed with cold.

Trying grain and coir(wheat berries 1:1). Just inoculated these jars. Excited to see the results.

we all know mushrooms will tell you themselves how to grow them only if we are listening and I just realized that the best way to learn how to listen to your mushrooms is to eat them.

They just told me that Muda is right coir and grain is the way to go.

In case it helps anyone out, I've managed a work around if you have a small 6 qt. pressure cooker.

Mine only fits one ziploc quart jar in the middle. Needless to say, that's a lot of pressure cooking for a 10 jar batch.

Now, there is a very good chance I have my head up my ass on this one, and please feel free to tell me.

I can fit 2, 1.75 qt. (1.7L) pyrex bowls in my little PC . The equivalent of 3.5 quart jars.

I've used a large canning pot of boiling water for 1 hour to (hopefully) sterilize the empty jars and lids. I'll take both the jars and PC'd pyrexes to my SAB and load them.

Sure, it introduces an extra step for contamination and it strays from the ease of the original tek but allows me to use the big boy jars...

No. Hahaha!

For 2 reasons :

1. The lids are LDPE 4 and won't withstand the 2 hour pressure cooking

2. The pyrex bowls won't fit one on top of the other in my little PC with conventional lids. That's why in the photo you can see one bowl's tinfoil is stepped in. It's a tight fit.

I've taken a batch of 2 out already and have had no issues with the water getting in.

... Not ideal, I know...

Quick question from a noob:

Everything is going along nicely, ziploc quart jars unscrwed 3/4", definitely nice white rhizomorphic mycelium growth, but it's been about a 4-5 weeks already and most of them are only 60% colonized. Is this normal? I started off with a MS print and have transferred several times on agar so I'm sure everything is clean, but I'm just wondering what's taking so long.

Temps at night are around 66, during the day around 72. I'm guessing it's the colder night time temps halting things? Be more patient?

Thanks in advance.

"Not ideal" is an understatement... it's more like downright crap practice and I'd be amazed if that ended up well. I'd rather not do bottle grows if I had to do that, but it's your grow, do as you wish.

For example, every time I read here that the lids of the grain jars remain sterile after the pc cycle until we remove the foil I'm all like...
:hahthatscute:

The picture is horrible. But what you're seeing here is a fucking mold LC, the water is kinda yellow and the blob you see in the middle is mold mycelium.

That's a little plastic container with a snap-on lid that closes tight and a tiny hole covered with several layers of MP tape.

Some tap water was sterilized in it and the whole container was thourougly wrapped in foil before the cycle. I do this because I like to dip swabs in sterile water before streaking agar plates with them.

This was an spare container with water that I didn't use in the end and kept it wrapped in foil (with the lid closed of course) in a cupboard for several weeks. I took it to wash it the other day and surprise, surprise!

Tap water is all it takes for spores to germinate, even distilled sometimes. Try doing a spore syringe with tap water and if you keep the syringe long enough the spores will germinate, nothing wrong with that though, you can still use that syringe. The minerals in the water and maybe some particles that got in the water before sterilization are all it takes for spores to germinate.

Mold spores are so ubiquitous and tiny that they can even get inside syringes with only distilled and sterilized water in them if you keep them for months in a random place like a table in open air, and they'll germinate inside the syringe no problem. Again, I had a huge spore load at my place until recently, but nonetheless it can give you an idea how slippery and treacherous mold spores can be.

You sir, are correct. I realize I am waaaaaay out of my league in this thread. In retrospect, I shouldn't have even posted my noob stuff here.

But, since I have, I'm certainly grateful someone such as yourself has responed. I plan to continue growing and am just looking to learn and contribute to the community. I've learned a lot from folks such as yourself and appreciate you taking the time to respond.

I'm sure blown away that molds could make it into syringes and containers as you've described.

Edit: would you care to elaborate, for my benefit,  on "crap practice"? Specifically the extra transfer in the SAB?

***So, Allof my jars went for shit, except one. Which you ask? The one I pressure cooked by itself . Lesson learned, got a presto 23 qt. and haven't looked back.
