I was finally able to get into. I'll have to look up how to edit the windows host file.

Suggestion:
Could perhaps a network of us volunteer webspace to have an off-shroomery-server status sites? That way, an admin could email a short list and we could post it, and shroomerites when faced with time-outs would know to go to a number of sites to find out what's up?

I wonder why editing the host file does help to get around the DDOS attack? When the whole bandwidth of a server is consumed by the DDOS attack it should not matter whether you make a name server lookup or not. Did this attack target the shroomery's name server ? Or is there a backup server with a different IP address ?

Only the single IP getting hit will get blackholed. If the box has multiple IP's then the hosts file thing will temp get around it.

why not put up a decent hardware firewall to prevent these attacks?

There hasn?t been such a firewall constructed yet.
Such a massive ddos attack will bring every server down.

I tremember a coupla years ago, there was a massive DDOS attack on a company called etoys.com... for a couple of days, the servers were down... then a solution was found, if i knew what it was i'd tell you... but it had something to do with consecutive hits within a short time span from the same IP being redirected to load from cache instead of from the server...

the group that did the attack was called rtmark, www.rtmark.com ... they're a bunch of anti-corporate wannabe terrorists whose main goal is to get airtime for their stunts... I was involved with them for a short time, helping them with improving graffitti technology, but I haven't been in touch for years...

if anyone can tell you how to stop these attacks, they can...

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/ thats how i get here its in my favorites You should update your bookmark to http://www.shroomery.org/forums/ yea, wtf!  i'm not talkin' about the Main Index  i'm talkin' about the MAIN.. index.  where it lists the most recent 5 posts or so.  it's been displayin' the same ones for days now.  i think someone needs to fix this problem.  i don't care about the main index of the BB showing the amount of new threads/posts.. .but the MAIN index.html of the shroomery should list the recently posted posts... 'cause otherwise, why do i have http://www.shroomery.org/index.html as my main page?
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/?Cat=  There is something similar what you regard already built in in the board software.

If you look at the bottom of the main index.
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/?Cat=

you will see

Past 7 days  Not if you have to type them in.

I type in
shroomery.org/forums

you type in shroomery.org/forums/

Which is shorter?  Oh look theres other forums click me   I was looking around and noticed that the bottom of  the main index page it says there are no birthdays today. Yet if you click on the  calendar link and then on  January 23 2004 it shows that it is Grovesk8ters Bday.

Just thought it was courious and perhaps an error.Anno posted how to edit the host file at www.*************.org but the post was promptly deleted by an admin.

I can only remember how to edit the file in XP, perhaps Anno or someone else can help with the other operating systems.

In Windows XP go to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc and then open notepad. Drag and drop the hosts file into notepad and you should see something like this:

# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97    rhino.acme.com          # source server
#      38.25.63.10    x.acme.com              # x client host

127.0.0.1      localhost

Add to the bottom line of text 69.28.174.165 www.shroomery.org and click save.

Access the shroomery by the following link: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/

BTW, this method didn't work for me with the latest DDOS attack but has worked on previous occasions.

The shroomery appears to have more IP addresses.
This is what my hosts file looks like under linux:

Quote:

127.0.0.1 localhost
#69.28.174.165 shroomery.org
#69.28.174.165 www.shroomery.org
69.28.174.164 shroomery.org
69.28.174.164 www.shroomery.org
#69.28.174.163 shroomery.org
#69.28.174.163 www.shroomery.org

If one of the IP address get's attacked just comment it out and use another one by un commenting it.
