Abort cores are blue...
    #2477694 - 03/26/04 06:34 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Got a newbie question. I was just picking some aborts off my cakes. They were all healthy looking. Brown caps, solid structures, no strong smell. When I cut them, the cores looked fine as well. I came back a few minutes later and the cores had turned a dark blue color. I made a few more cuts, further up towards the caps. Once again, the cores looked fine at first, then started to turn blue after about a minute.
Is this normal? What does this mean? Does it spell doom for my cakes? Can I eat the aborts?
Sorry for the ignorance.
Thanks for all help.

That is the psilocin or psilocybin oxidizing.  That means they are active   The quicker they turn the more potent they are.  Eat em up!

Blue bruising is usually a sign of active shrooms. Yum!

these kind of mushrooms have that reaction. They call it "bruising blue." If your aborts turn blue while still on the cake/casing, take them off quick because they'll rot soon.

The intense bluing indicates oxidation of the goodies. They are fine to eat and generally aborts are going to be more potent then mature fruits from the same cake.

You may have lost some psiloc(yb)in, but it sounds like they still worked well for you.

Its generally said that the degree of blueing is an indicator of the potency of psilocin/psilocybin, but I do not think there is any proof of this.

That said, it is normal for psychoactive mushrooms to show blueing.
The only danger is that there are blueing, non-edible mushrooms also.

If the blueing is a result of the active ingredients oxidizing then the faster it blues the more potent it would have to be due to more active ingredients coming in contact with oxygen. Right??? I think so....
