Need Help With Identification
    #24772379 - 11/09/17 09:46 PM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Hello,

I am a new mushroom hunter. I need help to identify this mushroom.

Habitat:
New Jersey. I found these growing on grass near a pine tree.
There were more than 30 of these growing in a 10x10 ft area. It rained lots a day before.

Gills:
Orange, attached

Stem:
About 2 inches long. Hollow, thick and fragile stem wall.

Cap:
Diameter Average 4 inches, dry, flat. Looks like dry crusty bread. Some have holes like bread or swiss cheese. The mature ones have a hole in the center which extends into the stem. Some greenish blue coloration near the edges looks like mold.

Spore print color:
Sorry... was not able to get a spore print. But the mushroom stained my hand orange when handled.

Bruising:
No bruising

Other information:
Smells like mushroom - earthy. Many of these had a greenish blue hue like mold.

Those look like Lactarius in the group of species near L. deliciosus.

Take one and break or cut it in half, and see what color "juice" oozes out near the edge. It should be orange (like a carrot) or red. Also try licking a little to verify that it isn't peppery or bitter.

These species are edible (verify the stuff I mentioned above) and most of them are fairly good tasting after cooking.

Having said that, those look a bit old to me, and they will probably have lots of little tunnels with maggots in them. If so, don't eat them. They will also then have bacteria that can cause food poisoning.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks ToxicMan. That was very helpful.

Unfortunately, those mushrooms were mowed down by the landscapers today afternoon before I could reach them again. :frown:

A few questions:
1. Are those holes caused by maggots? I found it very peculiar.
2. Is that greenish blue coloration mold or is it natural for this mushroom?
3. I don't recall them having any "juice" or milky discharge when I broke off its gills. How long should I wait to observe bruising or discharge?

Thanks again.
