Extra tub seems like a big waste.
And the lids were loose on mine from the get go. But I don't call that open air.

I also find the dubs annoying space-wise. Moving around a bunch of dubbed tubbs is a pain in the butts

Those boxes I kept open air I was misting a lot. Like every 2-3 hours. But towards the end I backed off with the misting to see how it went due to bodh's posts about there being plenty of water in the sub. I was only misting in the morning, maybe once in the afternoon and before lights out. My sub was looking pretty dry but the boxes still felt heavy indicating a good amount of water content still. At this point, since they were past the pinning phase it prob didn't require the misting as much either.

once the pins look like this id stop misting during open air. the mushrooms themselves produce enough humidity to keep things spicy.
this isnt a shoebox... but its a 20qt sterlite. a mega shoebox! unmodified open air. flipped lid for 8hrs at night while i zzzz
if the pinset or fruits require you can always bottom water a bit.
glad your are doing open air pixel. those shoeboxes of yours looks sweet. gives me inspiration to step it up

I'm loving these shoe box's. It's so easy to make a shit load of them.
I spawned these exactly 7 days ago. I've had em under the floro for 2 days with just the lids cracked.
How long until they start needing misted usually. I know it all depends on conditions like room temp and rh but I was just curious if you guys usually have to mist before they start knotting up or not?

Got some more boxes done up. All together, there are 5 boxes of PE6 1qt.spawn to 1qt. Coir/Gypsom, 1 box of Malabar same ratio, and a "boot-box" of LGT 2qt. spawn to 2qt. C/G. Gonna try just the lids this time. No dub-tubbing. Hope y'all have a goodin'! Anyone heading out for Dead & Co. fall tour? I'm heading out Thursday.

Well that's great to hear. I had a couple jars done before my cvg got here and I just cased them and they were slight bacterial and sucked ass. Got about a dry quarter.
yuk!
This shoe box I spawned just two days ago and it seems to be flying!

Keeping my fingers crossed here.

Noted. That's pretty much what I already figured, but was just thinking it would be better to keep the surface moist if it ever looks dry. But now my thinking is cleared up in relation to the moisture still in the sub providing water needed for the fruits, and the fruits providing moisture for humidity.
Those are some beautiful looking lil buddies in that photo. I would be pretty excited to see that in a box or tub

I thought the same thing. I've got some P Cyan and almost woulda wondered if I had mixed the spores up except that they wouldn't grow like this

So I tried autoclaving my sub within the shoeboxes and it made things much easier for me.
I put field capacity sub mix into the shoebox (1:1:1 coir, verm, manure based compost with ~7% gypsum) and covered with tinfoil before placing in the autoclave. Ran 90 minutes at 160°F and left a few days for my rye to finish colonizing.
All I had to do was dump my grains, mix and level. No extra AC bags or jars for pasteurizing the sub. I love it.
I may even buy a few shoeboxes to pasteurize my sub from now on; 5 qt at a time would make the 30 qt of sub I make for my two monos easy to do...
Will post pics in a few weeks once I have something to show, but 1 qt of Pc B+ pin-clone spawn to 2 qt of my sub mix. Colonizing with the lid on for a week or so, then I will flip it or do open air depending on if I'm home or not.
Thanks for listening to my rambling, but the one and done and using shoeboxes to pasteurize sub is revolutionary for me! I hope they perform well for my cultivation habits.

i think manure is going to get funky when you expose to open air.9sterilized manure right? has to be bottle style i think??) unless you have a fh or you can be super awesome in the box
