No Boil Spawn Bag Tek
    #24760900 - 11/05/17 09:38 AM (3 years, 5 months ago)

Hello Everyone

Im new here, but not new to the hobby. So much so that a lot of how I do things could be classed as old school. On that note, I have been preparing 4qt grain spawn bags the old tried and true "soak and boil method" for years now. Two rounds a day gets me 18 bags. I was just wondering, couldn't dredge anything up in the search function, has anyone come across a reliable no boil method for preparing spawn bags?

Thanks in advance for any replies,
Craig Johnson

If it's wbs you're using for grain check my signature. With a big pot and a big strainer you can prep hundreds of pounds in a day.

Thanks for the suggestion, I had a look, great write up! The tek definetly allows for someone to skip soaking the grain, but still gotta boil it, which is what I'm trying to avoid. I'm thinking something basically along the lines of x amount of water + x amount of rye, bag it up/ seal it and PC. I guess I might have to play around with it. I'm concerned about being able to "control" the water in the bag so it makes consistent contact with the grain while in the pressure cooker.

Thanks for the reply! The soak and load seems promising. I work with rye exclusively so I will have to see if I can adapt it to work. The bag system is interesting, I stack 105qt sterilites, it seems to be the most efficient method I have come across, if production is the goal.

I'm not sure myself. I bet someone will confirm they do the soak and multi-rinse TEK with oats or rye without a boil.

I should have also of credited Hamloaf, he posted his "Ham Cram" technique there as well.

I haven't had luck with bags, but from what I have read people usually have at least a flow hood and use a pressure sterilizer.

Sure, no boil but 5 rinses and an overnight soak? Where's the benefit in that method?

I'm INOCULATING my jars/bags before the SOAK is even done with the tek you linked to. I'm not knocking it... if you prefer taking 2 days just to get your wbs ready to PC have fun with that!

so you dont botch a big ass amount of seed by adding heat. lots of people ruin wbs by boiling the water.
24hr soak requires zero brain power. just remembering to soak it the night before. rinsing is 100% optional.

i soaked 3days ago and inoculated while you were boiling water :stoned:

I agree with both of you actually, if the goal is to produce the most in a single day then methods that skip the soak are beneficial. But if the goal is overall spawn production and speed then being able to skip boiling is going to be best. For me the hassle of having to bring the mass amounts of water/grain to a boil is very time consuming. If I could bag and then PC, I could get at least another two PC runs in a single day.

I g2g all my bags in what I call my "balloon". Not my original idea, but super effective. Just two clear bags taped to each other at the seams and the other side taped to a small room size HEPA filter. You end up with tons of "positive HEPA air pressure" room to work in, way more then a Flowood even.

Problem is you cant sterilize your hands/gloves or the outside of bags/jars so the hepa air just blows contamination around the inside of the bags.

Yah I just searched shmuvbox and that is very similar to how I do it. I double the size of the bag by taping two together. I have never cleaned the HEPA unit itself though, that seems like crazy over kill. I have a streak going of over 300 bags g2g,d in the unit without a contamination. I started sealing my bags before pcing which helps a lot also. I wouldn't be able to maintain production using jars.

You can't botch anything with my method. The water is brought to a boil FIRST then the wbs is dumped in with no heat being added after, but I'm going to assume you didn't read the tek before criticizing it or you'd realize it requires no brain power OR days/hours of prep.

Not following your logic there. I have my grain completely prepped & PC'd in about 4 hours.... if I had started 72 hours earlier (like you) I'd be seeing growth in my jars already :stoned:

you see...

while you are boiling the water... im already PCing my wbs because yesterday, i dumped cold water into a vat of seed.

i think in terms of actionable time within a given range.

-the seconds it takes to cover the seed with water.
-the seconds it takes to dump the seed into awaiting colander
-and the 20min it takes to drain.

in my mind i just went from soaked seed(which takes zero effort) to loaded and building psi within an hour.

i have.

only recently after a decade long hiatus did i do your tek again and got it right:shrug:

but i was a tard:stoned:

mushboy.

Give foo mans a try again and come back and talk to us. Do it side by side with your recipe.

How hard is it to put big ass pots of water on your stove until boiling(30 min), pour in grain (Seconds), wait 30 min, drain/rinse (seconds) and done.

Truly the most reliable yet easiest and fastest method. You can't deny it!

so to clarify They are exactly the same in terms of time working both ways.
The downside to your method is the wait time.
