Tape over innoculation holes or coffee filter?
    #2472513 - 03/25/04 09:16 AM (19 years, 11 months ago)

I was wondering what everyone feels works best or what is currently working for them now and in the past. I am a newb to shroom cultivation and also to shroomery.org. I have had two batches of jars destroyed by contamination before I found this wonderful website. I now have or am awaiting arrival of everything I need to be succesful at it. *knocks on wood* I also have mapped out what I will be doing step to step except what I should do to keep contaminates from entering thru the tops of my jars after innoculation and prior to placement in the incubator. I just got my hepa air sanitizer today at Target(only $39!), will that be sufficient if I keep it in the closet with the inncubator or should I take further steps for safety's sake? Any info is greatly appriciated!!!

I hope to be posting in the Grow Log forum, so come check out what I got set-up in a few days. I'll try and document everystep from sterilization to harvest. Good way to get some advice and have some fun so why not right?

You don't really need to hepa your incubator. Just keep it sealed, that helps for temps anyway.

What grow method are you using? If you are donig the PF tek with the verm layer, relax, just don't fling them across the room or spit on them and you'll be fine. Just innoc and turn it upside down in your incubator right away. Bacteria doesn't seek out mushroom grow operations for the purpose of infecting them, it only floats around on air currents. So if there is no air flying into your jars, no bac will either.

Yes, I am using the PF Tek. I've just had two bad experiences so far and I want to get this right. I can't wait till everything arrives and I can get started. Thanks for the input, it's greatly appriciated!

You will definitely need some air exchange during last half of your jars growth....I think if you look around most folks just remove one of the pieces of tape from the injection holes, and never have a problem...I on the other hand never got away with it. Twice I removed the tape without a filter and twice my grow was ruined. After reading Anno's post about getting fresh air in the jars through filters of one kind or another, I started using coffee filters. I have never found a conatm in my jars every sence.

I've had perfect success without using tape or a coffee filter. Just the layer of verm and keeping them in their inccubator.

i remember a guy that would use no filter and after the jars got to around 50% done, he would flip em and give a smack. Just enough to where the cake would slide away from the glass a little.

I have a bunch of heavy duty dust masks that I use on my jars.I got them at Home Depot and they work really great-they are almost like a hepa filter in a way-they are thick!I use them where ever I need a filter(glovebox opening for fan,jar lids, air pump filter in terrarium). My first two attempts failed due to contams but ever since I started useing these filters I have been contam free"knocks on wood".You can get a whole box of them pretty cheap(forgot what I paid for these)They come in 50-100 packs and are re-useable too!Soak over night in bleach-water solution.

Hope that helps some.

Peace out

Thanks for the info guys, I think I will be using some sort of filter be it coffee or otherwise. Better to error on the side of caution, right? I work at a very popular home improvment wharehouse and could probably come across those masks at a great price. I'm still up for hearing what anyone else has to say about this, so reply if you have some info! Thanks again!

When using this type of filter do you use the metal lid ring, the filter and the metal lid, or just the ring and filter so that the dry verm. layer is right up against the filter material?

I was planning on putting the filter on after innoculator over them lid and ring.

I put the filter in between the ring and lid before sterilizing and when I innoculate my jars (in glovebox of coarse)I just remove ring and filter and then I replace it.Pretty simple and it works great. These filters are pretty thick and the only problem I have had so far is the ring being hard to screw back on due to the filters thickness-other than that--no problemo.Be sure to put aluminum foil over jar prior to sterilizing (keeps water out-we already knew this though right?).
I wont use anything else now. These are by far the best I have used to date.

Yeah I did know about the foil. I had planned on using the filters over the jar and held with a rubber band. I really do not want to open my jars, I don't have a glove box. I have a hepa air sanitizer to keep running next to my work area. I had planned on using germicidal bleach to sterilize the filters and rubber bands.

I have some jars that I did like that also and they work just as well that way.I took and put them under the ring on an empty jar and let it set over night so it would conform to the shape of the jar(there is a difference in shape-not much)and I trimmed the excess from around the lid (neater appearence)and I use a rubberband to hold them in place and they work just fine.If I can get my camera to working I'll post some pics for ya(if I get it to working).

Just to let you know I fixed my camera so I'll be posting you some pics of my filters and how they work-sometime later this afternoon so stay tuned.

Great! Thanks for the info man!
I just got back from buying some shelves and a pressure cooker. How did you go about sterilizing the coffee filters and rubber bands? Might not be needed but I would like to anyways. I have a post going on the grow log forum, check it out, I'm going to try and document the whole thing once I get all my supplies in. I already have some pics on there now. I'll be posting more after I get the shelves set up and the fruiting chamber moved.

Thanks again for all the info, very helpful!

AFOAF uses polyfill (can be sterilized with the jars) and it works fine. Good luck

I just fill the jars with the subsrate and put on inner disk, then I put on mask, then I put outer ring on,tighten it down(kinda tight fit).Once I get them all done,I then take scissors and cut the remaining mask from around the lid. When done it looks like a mini-dome.But if you use them on the outside, the rubberband(if tight enough)will hold just fine. You will have alot of excess material that you can cut away and custom fit them to your specs.I think they are by far superrior to coffee filters and the rubberbands will hold during sterilizing.
