Using a debit card at a store

So today I did something I try to avoid at all cost. I went to a local pizzaria and when I checked out I realized I had no cash and was forced to use my debit card. I know I shouldn't do this but in reality what's the risk like? Is there anything I should do to protect myself? I'm especially freaked out because recently I found out someone use my credit card number in China and I had to report it as fraud.

Cover the keypad with your hand or wallet as you enter your PIN. Skimmers are used in conjunction with cameras that capture your PIN. https://krebsonsecurity.com/all-about-skimmers/
Review your account activity daily.

This is retarded. There's no reason not to use a debit card. That's how most people pay for things nowadays.

There definitely is a reason. Have you not heard of all the hacks of places like target and Sony. If you use a credit card you can simply cancel it and not have to pay if someone uses it. If you use a debit card they can withdrawal your actual money which would be extremely hard to get back.

I have, but in the grand scheme of things that's a tiny percentage of people who are affected. The reality is that most people are never even close to being a victim of identity theft, and most people are stupid with their personal info.

Debit cards are directly tied to your bank account and any purchase made with one is basically just an electronic transfer of cash. So if somebody steals your credentials and buys a bunch of stuff with your debit card then that money is just gone. When you use a credit card, you're running a debt which you pay off later. So you owe somebody that money (vis a vis your credit account) and you can dispute any charges before you actually have to pay them.
That being said, the way that those chip cards work (in the US anyway) makes skimmers sort of a nonissue. There isn't enough information in the resulting traffic (between the chip and the outside world) for a skimmer to really do an attacker much good and you rarely have to stick your card far enough into a reader for anything to read the entire magstripe (except at gas stations). It's still a good idea to check for skimmers, just as a habit, but they're not nearly as problematic as they used to be (again, for the US and only for certain types of card readers). It's also still a good idea to avoid using a card to pay at a bar or a restaurant (particularly when somebody is going to have to walk away with it for a while).
There are also cheap IR cameras that you can buy for a smartphone that will let you take a photograph of the heat signature of a keypad, which can show you which buttons somebody touched if they've just put their pin number into a card reader (like if they're ahead of you in line at a store). Of course you can always just touch all of the buttons after you're done putting your PIN into the machine, to prevent somebody for taking a picture of your PIN.

You probably have to worry more of to bank selling the information that you like pizza to advertisers, than your card getting skimmed

If you are that paranoid then just take it as a valuable lesson and don't forget your cash in the future. It's better to forget your cash at your local pizzeria than being on holidays in China.
