small g2g jars
    #24751626 - 11/01/17 11:08 AM (3 years, 6 months ago)

I thought about starting some small grain jars 1/4 to 1/2 pints. I figure these should colonize pretty quickly compared to a whole pint (obviously). Should be a good way for me to test some of my lc for contaminants without wasting a whole pint of grains. The question is would this be more of less efficient as far as colonization time once I transfer to a larger jar of spawn or am I drawing out the whole process unnecessarily? I assume 1 pint would conize faster when adding a fully colonized grain to it than innoculating from ms. I realize this may be a pointless idea. I'm open to suggestions on how to verify clean lc or viable ms while minimizing colonization time

Sounds like an okay idea if your not sure if its clean or want to make sure you habe good technique. I agree no sense and wasting grain if your not sure.

As far as colonizing, once you g2g your receiving jars should colonize the same as they would using a larger master jar. It just wont stretch as far as in how many jars you can make from one.

Hope this helps and makes sense

Edit: the only way to test it for contams would be to use it on a jar or possibly on some agar. Im not sure if agar is the best way to test an lc though since ive never used or made them

Assuming you transfer them when they are fully colonized it's mainly a function of time rather than the no of jars. People normally say you can g2g 10 times for instance, but if you g2g a bunch of small jars, which then colonize faster, then you can g2g more than 10x. Of course if everything is scaled down that would also mean you're g2ging each jar with a relatively small amount of spawn and so it will take just as long to colonize a smaller jar as it does a large one. Does that make sense?

To try and explain it another way if you take 1 qt and g2g it to 2 qts vs g2ging it to 10qts those 2 qts will colonize faster and thus you can g2g at a high ratio many more times than you can g2g at the 1:10 ratio (which is recommended as 10x).
