And that is exactly why I love to use straight verm. A word of advise, try to find coarse as I have has some issues with the fine, well kind of like compacting. I seem to get better results with coarse for casing.

Uhm...fuck. Is this cobweb across my substrate layer?? It looks odd.. I might be paranoid but I have a strong feeling.

i dont know what you got going on there odd looking substrate and growth.
coweb explodes in growth and will soon cover the substrate in an organic polyfil kinda lookin shit. so watch it over 12hrs. if it looks like same? it aint cobweb. (nobody gets cobweb btw..maybe once every few months someone posts it)

You guys just saved me from a shitty mood thank you! I'll definetly keep an eye on it. hopefully we'll get to see how this sub performs. It may have just been bad mixing even tho I tried so hard..

Since the shoeboxes are pp5, can I prep my bulk sub in them, cover with foil and autoclave at 170C for 90 minutes? I was going to do 2 qt of sub and then mix in 1 full quart of spawn once cooled.
As long as it’s in a plastic tray, I can’t imagine the shoeboxes deforming, but wanted to know if anyone can think of a reason not to do this.

the lids are PP5 also so sure why not.
but its kinda awkward to PC a shoebox full of coco. it wont make the spawn any cleaner. that shit trichs out sterilized sub or not.

I figured the tin foil would help to keep water out that the imperfect fitting lid wouldn’t.
I have access to an industrial autoclave and can sit them normally with the option of pasteurization temps. Seems it would be easier and more cost effective than putting bulk in bags to then empty into the boxes... I would pasteurize the sub and not sterilize it.
I’ll give it a shot in a week or so when my grain jars finish colonizing and let people know

I would say try it then. If you had to stick it in a pc, maybe not but if you got a autoclave that you can fit them in, hell try it.

go for it! but it sorta sounds like turning a shoebox into a grow kit concept kinda thing.. which is cool. but not my thing.
you dont pasteurize coco either. but im just wondering what your motivation is for sterilizing the shoebox.

Sorry I thought I was clear, I use the Autoclave to pasteurize. I can set the autoclave to 160°F (I did incorrectly say 170°C before).
I always pasteurize my bulk sub and since it includes coir, that is what I would do. Generally I load my bulk sub (1:1:1 coir, verm, manure based compost with 5-10% gypsum) into autoclave bags for pasteuriation. I just figured this would save time and materials (just load into boxes after field capacity instead of moving into and from bags).
I'm not sure about the grow-kit comment; to me I am just pasteurizing in the container I will colonize and fruit (which maybe is the definition of a grow kit haha).
So I would prep bulk, add 2 qt to shoebox, pasteurize, then add and mix spawn once cooled. I will definitely do it and anyone with access to an autoclave would probably benefit time and material wise.
Thanks for the write up though matey! I'm hoping I'll be able to fruit with lids using only 3 qts of total sub, but I'm gonna snag some extra boxes in case I need to dub it up. Although with the dub I might be able to trap more humidity and only mist once a day or so... (maybe?)

That gets my mind going... you could take a jar of clean spawn and a precooked shoebox of coir, give it to a buddy, tell them when the jar turns all white, shake it up, mix it in the tub and level it out, etc. would be a cheap and easy way to give a friend an introductory “grow kit” to see if they would like mush cult, without them really having to do much research or planning
