Using the right jar
    #24748355 - 10/30/17 06:55 PM (6 years, 4 months ago)

Hi everyone! I'm brand new to cultivation of mushrooms, and I'm planning on receiving my first golden teacher spore syringe next week. I went to walmart today to pick up some jars for the PF-tek method of growing them and I was looking for wide mouth half-pint jars which was recommended by a few people. This is all I found and they are half-pint and wide mouthed like I read. I would like to know if this would be sufficient to grow in because its very short, small, and looks like it'd be hard to get the cake out when everything is inoculated and growing.

If you are using PF tek, then these jars won't suffice, you simply will not get the cake out of the jar.

And the jars are also too small for any sort of efficiency with grains.

You could do pf cakes in those, wait for them to completely colonize, then crumble the cakes into some trays or a monotub. Only if you are limited to JUST these jars at least.

TBH, Wal-Mart should have mason jars up to a half gallon, and if they aren't there, then they surely will be restocked in a day or so.

That's what I was thinking, I wish I would've noticed before I got home. I don't know if i want to crumble my cake up on my first attempt cause I feel like i'd ruin it. How about using tupperware like this? Would that be easier for the colony to become contaminated or would it work just fine?

Those glass jars are fine, but just don't fill the cake mix past where it curves in. Start the verm layer there.

Straight wall are more versatile though.

I have found jars like that decent for starting grass seed from spore or agar. Then grain to grain transfers.

Is this advice directed towards helping to get a cake that will successfully come out of the jar?

If so, the cake still wont come out. The shoulder slowly diffuses the jar into a smaller diameter size, therefore a cake with the diameter of the bottom part of the jar wont fit through the smaller diameter size of the mouth of the jar.

You would have to crumble the cakes using these jars, unless you let them consolidate like fuck. But even at that point, the cake still might not come out, and might have troubles fruiting.

Ya, really depends on how much they shrink at the consolidation phase. I really would prefer RGS in these for a starter grow. So much easier to inoculate to and from.

Is that really a half pint? I've never seen half pint jars so short as that

If they actually are half pint but just wider, then you could use them and crumble... regular PFs are half a pint so it should be the same amount of cake in the end.

PF cakes will perform fine when crumbling into a tray

I see 125 stamped on there. Think it's a quarter pint. (half cup)

Agreed, grains are super easy, and even a beginner can have success. Spores to grain are super iffy, but agar really isn't that hard either.

yeah, take them back and swap them for the right ones  :asianofapproval:

in my experience, I worried about things I didn't need to and I'd say adding a complication like this will just be a ball ache, which you don't need when starting anew hobby

if you're really stuck I just used tumblers and fashioned a lid out of tin foil, worked just fine with the dry verm layer

Yea it says half pint on the box, the 125 mark is at the halfway point i think. I'll probably just pick up new jars, I'd rather have a whole cake. If I were to crumble it, how would I go about doing it and getting fruit? Break it up with a fork, pack it on a plate, and let it incubate just like a normal cake?

If you break it up, you'd need to mix it into a substrate. Coir would be your best option. Look at the bucket tek or the shoebox thread... same idea as making sub for a mono, but you'd prob be doing shoeboxes working with PF cakes

True, you could do shoeboxes, and fruit them inside of a monotub with polyfill or micropore tape, or even a SGFC would do fine.

I brought those back and picked up a 12 pack of Kerr half pint jars, they look like this.

They look a lot better and easier to deal with but still, is it too small? I don't mind dealing with small cakes but if it's too small to grow anything on then that's no good.

Those are the standard jars used for PF tek, make some cakes.

Larger/taller jars can stall.
