Rye Question
    #2474855 - 03/25/04 11:34 PM (13 years, 5 months ago)

Howdy,

My friend was wondering if rye would have the proper moisture level if soaked until some of the grains were bursting, and then PC'ed for one hour w/tinfoil over the filters on the Jars. Would the moisture in the grains be alright, or would he want to add more water to the Jars before PCing? Dumb Question, but I thought I'd ask for him anyways...

Thanks in advance for the help!

I've seen it written somewhere that its not good to explode the grain, I can't remember why though. But from experience, the mycelium won't grow through those grains as well but it still works ok. Just soak them until they rehydrate or look like they've puffed out and then PC their asses.

make sure you drain all excess water, ie; put in a strainer and g-force dry them. before you put the grains in the jars , excess water will cuase mold/slow growth during incubation!

If anything, they look a bit on the dry side... My friend took a big ass chili pot and simmered alot more grain than he needed, drained most of the water out, let the grains sit for awhile (so all the water went to the bottom...) and scooped out the driest grains at the top into the jars. I gather he wouldn't need to add any extra H2O to the jars before PCing...
