If white people wearing dreads is cultural appropriation are black girls who wear weaves racially appropriating white people? Is it cultural appropriation when black people use smart phones or drive cars or use plastic or electricity?

Did the black crack junkies who broke into my garage and stole my bicycle and power tools, forcing me to install a home security system, culturally appropriate me?
I feel very appropriated right now.

No they did not, disrespect of personal property and sovereingty is not a lauded trait in western culture, it is however in primitive tribal cultures.

Yeah, I understand. If they rode my nice bicycle and used my power tools at work, then maybe. However, they pawned them for crack money.
I miss my bicycle.

Don't worry you can just show your white privilege card at the bank and they will buy you TWO new bikes and power tools made of gold.

I think the idea of cultural appropriation is mostly bullshit. With dreads in particular I don't think any group has any unique claim. A wide range of hair types will more or less do it on their own.
Caricaturing some other culture is generally a dick move though.

Cultural appropriation is for the type of people who need to shut the fuck up.
It’s on par with a high school girl complaining that another girl wore the same shirt that day.

I think the issue is that keeping dreadlocks is seen as a sacred practice by several groups and most white people wear them for fashion. Cultural appropriation is fucked up, but more so when American designers make millions profiting off of textile patterns and designs taken from ethnic minorities in third world countries and give nothing to those minorities.
Luckily Shivaites believe that nothing is taboo, so smoking weed is not cultural appropriation

I've always understood cultural appropriation to involve an aspect of cultural identity being commodified by an outside party; generally accompanied by a very shallow understanding of the culture itself (and fostering harmful stereotypes at the extreme). The exploitative nature of this practice, I believe, should be obvious. Native halloween costumes are a prime example, imo.
On the otherhand, cultures are not static entities; humans have always learned, borrowed, and shared from each other. The idea that, because I am Italian, I can not embrace shaivite philosophy without culturally appropriating south-asia culture just doesn't sit easy with me.
Basically, people sharing culturally (especially when it fosters understanding) is great; but dominant entities utilizing stereotypes and a surface level understanding to glean a profit from struggling cultures is no bueno.

Yeah I generally agree with this. There definitely are some crass and distasteful examples of cultural "borrowing", but I reject the idea that a person's ethnic background gives them a birthright to some cultural practices and excludes them from others. My background is Irish and an example I've brought up in similar threads is Japanese people in Japan playing Irish traditional music. I think it's pretty cool that that's a thing.

Those are technological advancements. How is that cultural appropriation?

Don't you know? We would still be in the dark ages if not for white people.

It was actually Muslim scholars that started the scientific renaissance. So technically we would still be in the dark ages if it wasn't for brown men.

When the original language is English, but now, in California, it is hard to be hired in certain places due to a bi-lingual requirement. Further, this happened in the North East (Procter and Gamble @ Shippensburg PA) in a factory I worked in. Half of the factory was Hispanic and the other half was black/white/asian. The problem was language. The factory had to be broken up and translators were even sought after. It slowed down production and made quality control extremely hard!
Learn the language, English.
