Hahhaa

I don't know if you remember that was actually the way this thread was started?
One day you messaged me asking me to explain to you the poke to LC, you tried it, liked it and then threatened me to write it up yourself lol
So I had to quit being a lazy ass and do it myself
Good times those

Looking for a second opinion on this.

Inoculated vs virgin, same mix.

The inoculated one is looking super cloudy, therefore probably bacterial?

Yeah that’s some textbook bacteria.

You’ll prob smell it when you open it up, I’ve had some gross ones that smelled like sour mash.

For a LC I used 5 grams of Sugar In The Raw to 100ml of distilled water and PC'd for 30 min at 15 psi. I did the poke and I got a couple of puff balls to grow right next to each other but they are not spreading throughout the rest of the jar.  Is this normal? If so, how can I break them up to seed other parts of the liquid?

I did that and the two connected pull balls just swirled around.  Nothing broke off from them.

I can't believe I haven't said it here but quality write up Josex. I've been playing with lc and li for about a year, the poke biopsy is great. I think a poke 2.0 method would be pretty awesome.

I have been pouring from a media bottle but it feels like a vector. I'd love to see how to build the jars you use.

This whole thread is a great read

:bow2:

This thread is what finally motivated me to start working with LC.  I find it amazing at how this stuff has evolved over the past few decades, in my opinion this is one of many critical turning points in the recent history of home mushroom cultivation.

To break up the myc I’ll swirl it really fast and then suddenly change direction. There’s a little skill involved in not having it splash all over the lid but it’s pretty easy and works great. If you get it right the myc blob gets obliterated into tiny specks.

Do you have a filter on it?

I have those syringe filters on mine now or I’d just shake them too.

Thanks, everyone.  The lid that I am currently using for my LC is a PF TEK lid with the four holes but I have micropore tape over them (minus  one hole that I put the needle through.  On top of that lid, I have a SFD.  Don't think I can get away with shaking so I did some swirling. Also did the mid-swirl gentle stop and reverse.

If all you have covering those holes is one layer of micropore tape and one of the holes has a needle hole in it then you are almost guaranteed to get contamination in that LC. You would be better off using a plastic lid that is unmodified

Hey josex I see that the point of your kid if to keep the luer lock fitting sterile while still providing G.E.

I picked up these for $5

8 gauge stainless steel luer lock needle

I was thinking if I put used a standard lid with an small sfd and jb welded one of these needles to it. Then cut down a syringe barrel and glue in the plunger with super glue, or maybe just plug the hole with epoxy. It may accomplish the same thing while not looking quite as clean.

The reason being height is of a concern for me, as I'd like to be able to sterilize in my instapot and not have to pull the canner out. I will only be working in pints and half pints as variety is more important to me than quantity

Epoxy is a strong adhesive. I have tried it on earlier versions of my lid but it will fail eventually.

You have to exert some torque on the luer everytime you screw/unscrew a syringe and that adds up pretty quick over time. Also the hole will inevitably end up rusting and that will damage the epoxy too.

They start rusting like this:

And then the luer starts twisting everytime you screw a syringe, which means the end of the lid of course.

Any glue however strong will fail eventually, sooner or later, so the ideal lid will have no glue at all, just a metal luer fitting and a silicone gasket so you can screw the nut down nice and tight.

I see that makes perfect sense. I think even though it may not last it only is about 1.75 a lid I will run it until I can find the parts you have used. I have no idea what they are called or where to even pick them up.
