Water absoprtion in BRF cakes -[EXPERIMENT]-

EXPERIMENT
To determine exactly how much water
a fully colonized 1/2 pint BRF cake
absorbes during dunking process.

Four BRF cakes were used in the experiment.
Before weighing, each cake was thoroughly rinsed
in cold tap water and wiped dry with paper tissue
until no more moisture could be extracted from
the cake with the paper tissue.

The weight of the cakes throughout the 24 hour dunking process:

After Birth 73.4g 77.4g 90.9g 80.9g

After 3 hour dunk 81.0g 87.0g 97.8g 89.3g
^{Water absorbed 0-3h: 7.6ml 9.6ml 6.9ml 8.4ml} ^{~ 2.71ml/h/cake between hour 0-3}
After 6 hour dunk 85.2g 94.8g 101.8g 94.7g
^{Water absorbed 3-6h: 4.2ml 7.8ml 4.0ml 5.4ml} ^{~ 1.78ml/h/cake between hour 3-6}
After 12 hour dunk 90.1g 100.0g 108.1g 99.5g
^{Water absorbed 6-12h: 4.9ml 5.2ml 6.3ml 4.8ml} ^{~ 0.88ml/h/cake between hour 6-12}
After 24 hour dunk 94.2g 105.1g 113.2g 103.6g
^{Water absorbed 12-24h: 4.1ml 5.1ml 5.1ml 4.1ml}^{~ 0.38ml/h/cake between hour 12-24}
Total ~water: 21ml 28ml 22ml 23ml

Hydration after 6 h: 56% 62% 49% 60%

Pics below are of 20ml spore syringes next to BRF cakes to help put into perspective
how much water the four 1/2 pint BRF cakes absorbed each within the first 6 hours of dunk:

This is how much water cake 2 absorbed in 24 hours

Hope someone can find joy or use from this experiment, I intend on continuing this experimenting and extending it to compare mass vs surface area when it comes to hydration, to investigate bottom watering or 'low surface area watering' instead of dunking and submerging cakes to hydrate them to field capacity. We'll see where this ends :smile:

Updates will come for sure.

PS: I know Leopardman did a similar experiment some years ago, I was just curious about exactly how much water a BRF cake 'sucks' up and LM's experiment really didn't tell me that. Also I had already started on this experiment before I learned of LM's post so let's just call this an 'update' on BRF water absorption science :smile:

Actually awesome. So you basically had very similar results to what I had at the time. First 12 hours seem paramount in terms of water absorption

Went out today and bought 24 jars plus 30 since before that are colonizing right now (testing clones) and now I'm gonna
experiment with the PF Tek recipe as well to see if different amounts of water in BRF cakes gives different colonization times.

So much fun information to extract from Pf Tek alone, can't wait til I get more comfortable around grains and start experimenting in that department too. Much more stuffs to come.

PF cakes are the way to go if you like to experiment as much as I do :thumbup:

Less water content always tends to give you faster colonization times.

Not sure if you already checked one of my old threads but it might interest you.

I know this is an older post but I felt compelled to say...Thank you so very much for this research you did! I'm a noob grower, on my first jars now and just started dunking. This was EXACTLY what I was trying to find out. I'm willing to bet if you were to leave them dunked for another 12hrs the water absorption would have halft again. It seemed very linear, almost predictable in the amount of drop off from one time to the next. Now I know the last 12hrs is minimal. Awesome job!
