Tiny burma shrooms
    #2473868 - 03/25/04 07:26 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

SWIM is having a problem with his first casing attempt. He has had many successes using PF cakes with the PF strain, but never had such tiny little shrooms. He used whole grain brown rice in pint jars, innoculated with Burma from Ralphster, and cased whole cakes side by side in rather large containers (9"x8") similar to the 9er technique with about a 55/30/15 ratio of sterilized verm/peat/oyster to about 3/4" over the cakes (one case with the same problem has about a 1.5" layer). The mycelium was allowed to poke through the casing in a few places before initiating fruiting, resulting in a little too much surface colonization but many pins formed and grew nonetheless. The humidity at first was near 100% but has been recently corrected for casings. Temp stays around 75. Even with the slightly lower humidity none of the shrooms grow larger than about 3" (tallest, after sporolation has begun) and they are all very very thin. Once dry they look just like toothpicks or tiny twigs with an itty bitty cap on the end. After reading in this forum that thin stems could possibly be caused by lack of oxygen he increased fanning to about every 4 hrs and substituted 2 of the fannings per day with the use of a vacuum cleaner to suck out the low-lying CO2. He knows for certain it is not a problem with the casing moisture as they are still quite moist and he has one or two casings that had a little too much water which have the same problem as all the others. During dozens of searches of the forums he came across someone who claims to have fruited 2 different strains under identical conditions , one burma, and this tiny shroom problem only occurred with the burmas. Could the wide casing have problems because the nutrients are still being spent colonizing the casing, leaving less for the shrooms? If so he can have higher hopes for future flushes. Whatever the problem is, the most direct result of it seems to lie in the formation of the hyphal knots. The knots never get very big, just a mm or so wide, they just stay thin and grow upwards, with a slight fattening of the base of the stem. There are alot, maybe 2 dozen or so of these little shrooms growing from each fruiting case, they're just all tiny. He thinks any information that anyone can provide regarding ways to increase knot size prior to vertical growth would be of great help. He is going to try testing the casing PH, thinner containers, and definately fruiting immediately after patching for the future casings. Thanks alot.

My friend just recently had the exact same problem with 2 casings of hawaiin strain. All the shrooms were tiny! And it def. was not because of lack of oxygen cause he fanned 3 times a day. Does anyone know if it could be because of too high humidity or water content in the casings? What % of humidity should casings be fruited @? Thanks

casings should be in 80-90% depending on how wet your casing is looking imho

Almost positive the problem was the substrate temperature, something SWIM never had to worry about with cakes. Even though the air temp a few inches above the casing was 75, the casing was cold. I wouldn't be surprised if burma needs a slightly warmer temp than most to fruit well, that would explain why someone might have had problems with it and not another strain grown under identical conditions.

IMHO first casing projects are more learning projects than projects with great expected results.

In other words try tweaking your next project and see what happens. when in a hobby, you try different things and find what works for you. The main thing is to learn rom from your trials and tribulations.

Good luck and welcome to a new found love.
