tub grow
    #24732970 - 10/23/17 10:50 PM (6 years, 5 months ago)

I've got a 23qt tub that I used to spawn some KSSS on WBS to Hpoo.
Been out of the hobby for a long time and I think my substrate was a little too wet because it's been about 25 days since I spawned and the mycelium seems like it's stalling out at 98%.
I'm debating fruiting and hoping the last bit colonizes with the added air.
I'm also curious if my tub is sufficient for fruiting conditions or if I need to add more holes for polyfill. Another user suggested I may have been reading an outdated tek. I've got four holes drilled, two on each side where the handles are.

Here's some pics:

The dimensions on the tub are 38.8cmx29.2cmx29.8cm

Well fuck, I just found three fungus gnats in the tub. There's a small crack along the lid where they flew out.
Should I fruit while I still can?
Don't want to lose the tub to grubs :emocry:

Id just fruit as is until it tams if it does,  not much you can really do but wait , maybe put a stick pad or 2 close by,  if you have any house plants id check their soil n make sure you dont got a bunch nestin somewhere

Also there pretty harmless when adults ( have wings) its the larvea stage were they do the most damage , so long as they arnt layin eggs in the tubs you should be fine

Okay, im going to start inducing fruiting when i get home tonight.
Do you think I should add some holes up near the handles for a more passive FAE? Im going to have a fan blowing in the same area so there should be plenty of flowing air already.

I think you should add more holes.  Not sure how many you have at this point?
I'm still kind of new but look at this and you will see how it works.

Those flies are ruthless. I think you should fruit outside.

It was flat in the begining but seems to have consolidated at an uneven rate.

Has that worked well for you? Its getting down in the low 40s at night here and the high 70s to low 80s during the day.
You know, now that I mention it, those are pretty good fruiting temp fluctuations :strokebeard:

What about when it rains? Just bring it inside for till it stops? Or get it under some cover so it can take up the added humidity?
Would I even need to add polyfill if I kept the tub outside?

Okay, so I just got home, I found 4 more flies in and around the tub.
Theyre a little big for fungus gnats, so I think they may be fruit flies.

Either way I'm going to begin inducing fruiting conditions.

I'm going to drill four more additional holes (so 8 total) higher up near the lid, above the current holes, but I'm curious how close I should have them towards the lid.

At this point I'm not following any single tek, mostly going off several teks I've read previously and my previous experience from years ago.
Any advice at this point would be greatly appreciated, I'm a bit nervous about taking this next step since it took a while to get here with MS and overly saturated substrate....  :dizope:

So here's what I ended up with:

I believe the four bottom holes are 5/8" and I just added the top two holes at 7/8".

In hindsight I should have put the four smaller holes on the longer side and the two larger holes along under the handles.

Oh well. At this point I'm just counting this as a learning experience.

As for your holes and all that... its more about keeping your conditions ideal and how you want to approach it.

Some are doing monos without any holes at all now... just turning the lid upside down, or removing/cracking the lid for a period of time and misting as needed.

Just need to develop your understanding of what the proper conditions are for your tub, and then you will know to get there with your current setup.

You want constant surface moisture while getting as much FAE as possible.

You want the humidity to constantly cycle rather than being 100% held in, because this is what allows for surface evaporation to take place.

So ya just need to create conditions in which your tub will cycle humidity through FAE, creating constant surface evaporation. But you also need to make sure your surface always has plenty of moisture.

For your mono, FAE comes in through the top holes, and gets pushed out the bottom holes. If setup correctly, you shouldn't need to do much.

If its not quite getting where it needs to be, then just help it along with misting or providing more/less FAE through hole stuffing, lid cracking, or whatever.

Its 4am and I've been up all night on the shroomery, so I hope some of this post makes sense

When maggots start covering your tub, move it outside.

For sure, I'll be keeping a close eye on it.
Surprisingly I haven't noticed anymore flies since starting fruiting conditions. Maybe the light and FAE scared them off?
I'll be waiting to see if they laid eggs (I'm expecting that they did).
