What are all the brown specks in my agar?

All my agar is turning out this way. Is this just some sort of sediment or a contam? It appears after the agar has cooled and slowly turns the agar a shade of brownish/tan.

I've done pour and no pour methods and work with a SAB.

Is this something in the agar mixture that PCing the agar longer might fix?
If it's a contam, is it just a lack of sterile technique on my part?

My agar recipe is 2g agar, 2g light malt extract, 200mL tap water.



Here is another picture of the specks. They are down in the agar and appear to be in a layer almost.

What condition was your ME in before you used it? Was it stored in a container that wasn't air tight? Had it solidified? Perhaps it didn't get a chance to dissolve completely? If so, i doubt it will hurt anything, but i'm really just guessing here. I'm sure someone who knows better will chime in. Now i'm curious myself

If I had to guess I would say it's an issue with you're malt extract, it would make sense that undissolved particles are leeching into the agar
over time staining it. The MEA recipe I use typically is a little stronger than yours [same amts. to 125ml] and my plates come out clear as day.
How long are you PC'ing them for?

I PC for 20 min after reaching 15 psi. The LME was recently purchased and is stored in a tupperware container.

I was just curious if this was a contam or not. If this is only sediment from the LME then I have no problem with that, just wanted to make sure it wasn't something more serious I needed to toss and start over.

I'm still new to this so trying to learn how things should and shouldn't look still.

Boil your malt extract water and agar first. Then decant it off the sediment.

Malt extract and water will form some crud that will precipitate out when boiled.
