Two strains in 1 casing?
    #2472868 - 03/25/04 01:58 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hi
I inoculated 6 jars usin the PF Technique, 3 were of strain B+ and the 3 were of strain EQ (Ecuadorian?).  This is my second time growing, so I thought I'd try the casing technique instead of the cakes. However, in my haste, I forgot that I had grown the cakes using two different strains . They are already all crumbled and cased together, I am waiting for the mycelium to take over the top layer of the casing.

From what I could gather in the advanced section, it seems that the mycelium will still fruit, though I am unsure if mushrooms of both types will grow or whether a hybrid will. My question is, can anyone confirm fruiting from experience? If so, how were your yields? Were they noticably higher or lower than previous attempts?

Thanks in advance

here you go straight from the casing FAQ.

Can I case different strains in the same casing container?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, you can in theory.
If you do it, place each strain in it?s own sector of the container, don?t mix the substrates together. If you do it nevertheless, you will get many, many small mushrooms of each strain scatered throughoput the casing, since the substrate won?t grow to a block and thus won?t be able to produce big fruits, but only small ones from the local accumulations of the different strain?s mycelia.
BUT: Different strains have different speeds of growth and thus you will have difficulties adjusting the required temperature and humidity requirements, since the cycles of both strains will be different.
Another thing that speaks aginst it is that you can easily confuse the strains this way, something that shouldn?t happen if you attend to take prints and possibly share or trade those prints among your fellow growers.

All in all: don?t do it, better place each strain in its own container.

P.S.:
Sometimes you might hear people saying something along the lines of "don?t mix 2 strains in a casing, they will compete for nutrients...".
That?s nonsense.

Once you are at the stage of casing a substrate, the substrate is already colonized(not completely digested of course, but at least the outside of the substrate kernels is encompassed) by either the one or the other strain. So they won?t compete for any nutrients, the nutrients are already allocated.

Do not share the prints.

Uhm, actually, that's not nonsense at all, you've just got the wrong end of the stick. Two strains in a casing will fight each other and seek to overcome the other, wasting nutrients that could better be used for fruiting. The mycelium of each strain will seek to digest the other and "steal" the nutrients from the other, wasting nutrients.

just an update for you all..

its been roughly 5 weeks since i made the casing
18~19 dry grams so far (2 flushes), expecting about 3-4 more grams for the final flush

so it came out fine, despite my worries
i'm happy w/ the results though i think i might have gotten a little bit more had i done it right

i opened up the terrarium today and found about 10 or so fruit flies, so i'll probably quit growing any more once these last 3 shrooms are ready

interestingly, the first one that grew looked like it was split in half, there were two ridges on each side that went along the entire shroom. Maybe its a hybrid mutant? probably just a coincidence
peace
