Some agar questions?

I posted this in the mushroom cultivation forum and no answers. Maybe someone here can help me.

Let see if someone can tell me if any of these products are suitable as a substitute for malt extract:

Product n?1: Barley malted molasses
Ingredients: Proteins, Lipids?, Fructose, Glucose, Maltose and Sugar.

Product n?2: Rice malt
Ingredients: Rice, barley and water

Another Q: I?ve read of people using carrots instead of potatoes in the PDYA, did anyone here try it? and if so, did it give the same good results as potatoes?

Barley malted molasses sounds like malt extract under a slightly different name. Rice malt is normally rice that has been sprouted and dried but the ingrediant "water" makes me wonder what it is. Is it a heavy syrup used for brewing? If so, it is probably an equally good form of malt extract. I have found that ordinary molasses from the grocery store makes a decent substitute for malt extract. Just guessing, but carrots would likely work as well as potatoes. Excellent agars can be made from an amazing variety ingredients.

Both are syrups that a nearby health store sells for ?diabetics? (people that can?t consume certain types of sugars). I?m gonna get the barley malted molasses and see how it works. Gonna try the carrot broth dextrose yeast agar and see if it makes any difference.
