I found this pair of Shaggy Manes (Coprinus comatus) in my yard today. there is a patch of them there but they dont fruit often.

Yes, and they are one of the easier mushrooms to identify.

Be sure to cook them before they begin to change color, otherwise they become inedible quickly.

The shape isn't entirely unique, but it is unusual enough to be one of the key identification features. Incidentally, that particular shape is referred to as "cylindrical" in the technical literature.

Other features that should be noted for positive ID are the scales on the cap; the extremely crowded gills that are white to begin with, then turn pinkish then black and inky; the slender, hollow stem; and the habit of growing on the ground in lawns, pastures, or soil.

that patch has only produced one big mushroom before. I have onlt heard of one recipe for marinated shaggy manes. Has anyone got another recipe for these? they look as if they might be quite tasty.

ps. i plan to throw some water at the base of these in hopes that they might grow a bit bigger. :smile:

Slice them lenghtwise and sautee them ion butter with garlic and lemon juice. AND SERVE ON BUTTERED TOAST.

I have seen these grow on whole lawns and almost wall to wall on such lawns. Just never had the camera with me to photograph those lareger fruitings.
