The Kratom Cultivation Archive 2

The Mitragyna speciosa Cultivation Archive WELCOME EVERYBODY, PLEASE READ THE PURPOSE OF THIS THREAD SO YOU MAY HAVE AN UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT WE AIM TO ACCOMPLISH HERE AS WELL AS HOW YOU CAN EFFECTIVELY CONTRIBUTE IF YOU SO DESIRE. I HOPE EVERYONE FINDS THIS THREAD TO BE OF VALUE, ENJOY!PURPOSE OF THIS THREADThe purpose of this thread is pretty straight forward. I hope to compile as much accurate information about the cultivation of Mitragyna speciosa (Kratom) in the western world, specifically the United States, as possible. I will be keeping the OP updated with any and all contributions from the community so that the thread may effectively serve as an archive, containing resources and information directly and concisely pertaining to the cultivation of Kratom. In order to make this thread an effective resource, I ask that we please try to keep the chit chat and off topic discussion for other threads. I also ask that contributions be as concise and as accurate as possible, citing all sources where possible. Finally, please use pictures as a means to effectively teach others what you have learned and try to refrain from posting pictures as a means of showing off. For example, I welcome individuals to post pictures of their grows, but if you’re going to do so, show key aspects of your methodology, such as irrigation, lighting, or any other characteristics you have found beneficial to the success of your plants. Well, that’s pretty much everything, I hope this thread is a success and I thank everyone for your contributions! INFORMATION & RESOURCESFor general discussion about growing Kratom in a more casual manor I encourage you to join the Mitragyna Growers Unite thread! https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23693075General Guides/Information on Growing Kratom:https://kratomgrowguide.blogspot.com/2016/02/kratom-grow-guide-how-to-grow-kratom.htmlhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_A3-5VLcq-cp2cL43p5gFg/feedViable Vendors for Live Kratom Plants and Seeds:I don’t believe we are allowed to share vendors on the Shroomery, but I will say that it can be very difficult to find any legit vendors for live plants and/or viable seeds and many of the vendors who are legit, seem to almost always be sold out. I have found resources such as social media groups to be the most helpful in finding legit and trustworthy vendors, so if you’re having a hard time finding your first baby plants or seeds you may find Facebook to be very beneficial. Lastly and it may go without saying, but always do your research in vetting a legitimate vendor in order to avoid scams. I believe this may be a larger issue with vendors claiming to sell viable seeds. Growing Temperature:After referencing various online resources, including this community, the consensus appears to be that Kratom favors the following temperature range: 27° to 32°C81° to 89°FCloning, Propagation, and Seedling Care:The first important note brought to light by LifeUnderAwno and MeanGreen, is that Kratom seeds are in fact viable and can be successfully grown with ease. This may be a common misconception, which I believe to be due to misinformation that has been spread by multiple online vendors who don’t want people to know how easy it is to grow their own Kratom. lol da fuck, I have been searching for info on growing kratom on the Shroomery for like three weeks and haven't come across this thread. WTF.... Literally made this thread because I didn't think there was a general kratom growing thread yet. Literally searched many variations of "growing kratom" and never saw this thread pop up lol oh well
Thank you!
Will likely keep this thread, but update the purpose to compiling all similar spaces and other online sources for information pertaining to cultivation in a concise manor.

@Lipa Kreepa - Thank you.
I believe the feat of growing kratom in the western worlds does pose its its challenges, but can certainly be accomplished with prolific success and yield. I hope to use my experience working on permaculture farms in the states and Latin America, as well as my knowledge from my biology education to help navigate this new era for the kratom plant and its cultivation. But having a fancy degree or education, of which many are far more impressive than mine, isn't what is going to guarantee my success in growing or what will allow me to pioneer the science of speciosa cultivation. What will allow me and others like me to accomplish this endeavor is the communities group efforts, as well as the insights of experienced growers you have succeeded through trial and error. Over the course of the next few years I plan to compile as much scientific, detailed information as possible on the cultivation of kratom in the western world, while I simultaneously hone my own skills, attempting to discover new cultivars, better suited for this environment. I plan to continually increase the number of rooted plants in my possession, selling as many as possible for very affordable prices, helping me to fund this endeavor, which I hope will result in a written guide and possibly even an educational book, which I plan to continue writing and releasing regardless of legal status of kratom.
I am stoked to have joined this growing community and contribute what I can along the way. I will update this thread soon and start compiling as many resources as possible.

I don't intend on closing this thread, only changing the purpose of it to be more focused on citing specific sources related to cultivation. Basically going to make it a list.

Thanks for sorting out what this thread grew to become. I was thinking of locking it when I first saw it but thought I'd see how things progressed. This forum seems to have a way of self moderating itself and that does make my job a lot easier. I think having a general "grower's unite" thread and a thread like this will work well. The former is more for showing off, sharing experience and chit chat. This one seems to be the one for cultivation information compiled neatly as a resource. Probably not too much chit chat is wanted in this one. Otherwise we'll basically have Two threads serving the one purpose.
Am I off the mark or what?

@Karode - Yes you nailed it. That is what I was hoping to create anyhow, so it worked out for the best. I am working on compiling all the resources I have come across and used to begin my growing journey thus far and listing them in the OP. Then I will update the OP with any legitimate resources/information that is shared in the thread, so that everything will inevitably end up listed in the OP.
But like you said I would like to avoid chit chat and "showing off" although pictures are welcome to backup claims/findings. I welcome any and all concise information, anecdotal findings, and links to other resources, which I will do my best to organize as concisely and clearly as I can at the top of the thread!

I'll contribute what I learned about growing Kratom from seeds this past season. So far I've grown seeds from 2 different sources and 4 different strains; Rifat, Red Thai, Red & Green Indo. The seeds were definitely not fresh when I first got them, and I have planted Rifat seeds 4 months after I got them and they germinated just as well as the 1st time. I will plant more of these same seeds as an experiment next season at the 1 year mark (+ fuck knows how long the supplier had them for).
Seeds & Pods Description The seed pods are small, about the size and shape of a rice grain. Inside each of these pods are approximately 50 to 100 seeds. The seeds are oblong, tan in color, translucent and with a small darker dot in the middle which is the embryo.
Here's a pod next to a cm ruler:

The same pod's contents:

These teardrop shaped things in the Red Thai baggies are not seeds. They're found inside the pods but are what I believe to be some sort of membrane (you can see one in the above pic, on the very left). There was only a couple actual seeds in those baggies which gave me my only Red Thai sprout.
Don't get scammed and think the rumors about kratom germination are true because of these.
Germination Tips
- Sow the seeds on the surface of your medium, do not cover them
- Don't be tempted to sow too many per pot since the seeds are so small, or you'll have a hard time separating them later on. I learned this the hard way.
- Keep them in a humid environment, a mini greenhouse or ziploc bag is perfect.
- Keep them warm (I'd say 27°c to 32°c is optimal), a heatmat is recommended but not mandatory.
- It usually takes 7 to 10 days for the first sprouts to come up, more will follow the following days. It takes a good eye to spot them at first, the sprouts are so tiny.

Seedlings care Keep your babies in the mini greenhouse/ziploc for at least the first month but make sure it doesn't get hit by algae too much, I've had leaf burns because of it on small seedlings as seen below

Seedlings like to have some pot depth for their tapropt, if you started in small cups/pots I recommend repotting them at a month and a half or when they get about the size of the ones in the yellow pots on the right:

When you can't keep them in a humid environment anymore start acclimating them, kratom is tough and it will adapt pretty quickly without too much fuss. Some of my seedlings spent the summer outdoors and it's pretty dry here. Here are the same seedlings at the 3 months mark:

And at about 4 and half months:

Propagation I don't have much experience with kratom propagation yet but I was able to take my first batch of cuttings from my seed-grown plants at about 5 months. I used an aeroponic cloner and some clonex and I had 100% success in rooting those 9 cuts:

I remember hearing that they prefer about 25-28°C with 27°C being the sweetspot, can't give a source to confirm this though. When searching, I found a source saying 23-32°C or 75-90°F is the ideal temperature.

Yeah I'd say around 27 to 32°c is optimal, as long as you keep the mold and algae away. I think coco coir could be a very good starting medium in that regard, but I haven't tried it yet.

@mean green Wow, thank you so much for your contribution. This is exactly the kind of stuff I was hoping for. Above and beyond really. Quick question, I have seen in multiple peoples posts that they clip the ends of the leaves on their clones. What is the purpose of cutting back the leaves like this? Are you simply trimming back dying foliage or is there some other purpose?
Also great information on optimal growing temperature, absolutely essential for us noobies. I have seen some slightly conflicting information regarding temperature so thanks you all for for bringing this to light right off the bat!

Thanks for the kind words Sky Walker. It is scientifically proven that removing about half of the foliage on your cuttings speeds up the rooting process and gives better success rates.
This is because it helps to reduce transpiration. Since the plant has no roots it has almost no way of uptaking water (it does absorb some humidity through its stomatas but it is minimal compared to the amount of water lost from transpiration). So removing half the leaves reduces water loss by 50% too, resulting in much less stress on the cutting.
People also says that by cutting the end of the leaves the plant doesn't try to grow these leaves bigger and instead concentrates its energy on making roots.
This applies to most plants, not just Kratom.

Alright everybody, I finally got around to updating the OP to contain a couple of my resources as well as all contributions thus far. I apologize for it taking me so long to get this ball rolling, but I have been very busy with work. I will do my best to continue updating the OP as well as keeping it as organized as possible. Looking forward to more contributions, especially with winter just around the corner! Any information pertaining to the winter and bringing plants inside for that time period would be of great value I am sure. The YouTube channel I shared under General Information does contain some useful information about indoor growing and winter time for anyone who is interested.
