Cat food instead of dog food?
    #24701899 - 10/11/17 10:42 AM (6 years, 5 months ago)

This may seem like a weird question, but I am curious: if dog food works in agar, why not cat food? I mean it's generally a higher quality food and since I happen to have cats, it's a whole lot easier for me to acquire.
This is a theoretical question at the moment,  as I am nowhere near ready to try using agar, yet, but I definitely want to in the not too distant future.

You can use cat food just like dog food for agar.  Just make sure it has appropriate nutrients.

I'm new to this, so what would you say are the appropriate nutrients?

You feed your cats dry food?

Also it's never too early to try agar its way super easy idk why people think its complicated. Its basically jello. If you can make jello you can use agar.

Yes, I always have dry food out for them. They get a little wet food at night for treat. I feed them Friskies brand, both wet and dry. The current bag is Friskies "Surfin' & Turfin Favorites", with chicken, fish & beef, also corn and soybean meal, vitamin E, manganese, vitamin D-3, B12 & A, folic acid, biotin, and the list goes on. Will this do?

... You feed your cats the first cat food on the shelf that struck enough brand recognition from you or what?
:justnotright:

I mean it might, what with the corn meal.  Only one way to find out, I doubt anybody has tested every brand of cat food.

I live on a very limited budget, SSI, so I get the best I can afford and that they will eat. I would love to do better for them, but I support myself, my husband and my cats on just what I get. They are healthy & strong, with bright eyes, shiny coats and lots of energy. It's a struggle making ends meet, and often we do without, but our cats always get fed.
As for cat food and agar, I will give it a try and report my results.
Please refrain from the acerbic remarks unless you've walked a mile in my shoes.
Thank you.

If you're struggling to feed yourself in addition to living creatures that you voluntarily agreed to take care of then maybe growing drugs isn't the best way to spend what funds you have left over.

But I mean, if a nice trip will somehow make up for the food you could be growing instead then who am I to judge... Certainly not a doctor.  I'm sure the cats will understand.

You can also use rabbit food, hamster food, and a few other pet foods as well. 2g pet food, 2g agar, 100ml water.

If funds are tight growing drugs is probably not your best bet. Or you know you could just leave that stuff out of your cultivation questions so you don't get the advice you need but don't want to hear.

I would just make brf agar(if you're doing cakes) or grain water agar(if you're doing grain) so you don't need to use up your cat food.
I have a brf agar post you can look up if that's interesting.

I thought this was the cultivation board, not the life choice sounding board.  Id opt for dog food but you could give the cat food a shot at 2% as suggested.

It's the give advice board actually not the chime in and say 'nobody' and then to be on topic in your next post agree with someone else's advice.

Do you have a post with some experience relevant to this thread?

Huh?  I don’t think op appreciated  Innocules comment anymore than I or any other folks on the board. It’s negative and condescending and does nothing for cult.  It’s a lot like your attitude on here which is why you’re right here doing what you do...defending assholish behavior and trying to spin this thread out and then accusing me or others of being off topic and flashing your forum cop badge. All op wanted was a “yeah. Give it a try”, not some bullshit to try to make them feel bad about their present situation in life.  It gets old...ask around if you don’t believe me.    And yes, I do.  I use dog food agar all the time, hence my advice to use it instead of cat food agar which I tried once and it didn’t produce great results.  If they only have cat food available and funds are tight, then they should give it a try as opposed to going out and buying more supplies like BRF.   Shoot me a pm if you want to discuss it so we’re not detailing this thread.

MushrooMom, one can get free dog food samples at some pet stores, those samples often contain some "nicer" brand that has a lot of the good nutrients that mycelium likes. BRF Agar is a little easier to prepare than dog food. Both recipes are proven to work well for agar. One of these recipes smells like horse puke when cooked, I think you can guess which one, spend some extra dollars on BRF if your nose is sensitive

If funds are severely tight, then grow the cheap way.

Cheap PC, cheap jars, cheap grain, and cheapest supplies all around - from what I've read, its possible to do agar easily on the cheap using agar agar and small plastic dishes or babyfood jars instead of dishes.

Pastywhyte's Easy Agar Tek
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19208976

But if you can't manager agar cheaply, then MS syringes to grain, spawned to a monotub with coir requires very little cash and yields great results.

Its possible to grow mushrooms for next to nothing, after an initial investment in a cheap PC, some jars (can always use shit like jelly jars instead) and tubs (these can also be had for cheaply, and can always be found even cheaper at garage sales or posted free on craigslist)

I don't know what this bullshit is about not "growing drugs" if your money is tight - it doesn't cost much if done cheaply, and certainly is much more economical than buying from a dealer.

I think the point is that maybe if funds are that low no one should try to cultivate OR buy them.

I just wouldnt suggest growing if you're that limited in funds because it makes selling these drugs look promising.  Which is a fucked thing to do.

But yea OP, I think the cat food should work but I would suggest either the BRF or grainwater agar so you can get two separate uses from one material. Good luck!
