Using LED for light
    #24699691 - 10/10/17 02:41 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

I'm doing my first grow soon. A monotub, with PE. I have some bulbs that are a big set of multiple LEDs, that put about 50~watts each, I can't remember exactly. Would this be good for the tubs light needs? I'm also growing PE, I heard using a small casing is good for this. Anything else I have to look out for with these?

I have a Dog, but he lives downstairs and only comes up to the master bedroom(my room)sometimes, will my grow be fine if he only comes in an area of my room far away from the grow?

My cats roam the entire house and I do cakes in a sgfc and haven't had any problems in that regard. Your tub should be fine as long as he doesn't stick his nose through your polyfil stuffed holes while you're sub is still colonizing and if you're using CVG then it shouldn't matter as long as he doesn't chomp on your sub.

Its not the wattage or type of bulb, its the light spectrum. 6500K temp range is best.

Kalvin is color temperature. Its measured as correlated color temperature. Since the bulbs don't get as hot as incandescent bulbs they correlate the color to the kalvin temp of a black body radiator (basically a incandescent tungsten filament)
Two bulbs can have the same kalvin rating based on CCT
But they may use different wavelengths of light to get there.
Full spectrum led bulbs are still expensive. Florescent bulbs put out a lot of wavelengths from the spectrum at 6500k. Comparable led lighting puts out fewer wavelengths but still has the same appearance.

Different Bulb's will render colors differently. Bulbs of the same kalvin rating but different types can display certain colors better or worse than the other bulb. hence the color rendering index being developed.

Sorry for resurrecting this thread.  But I think this is a relevant addition following same line of questioning.

I'm looking to purchase LED Tube Lights and I can't find any with color rendering above 80.

I found 75 and 80, the 80 is twice as expensive.

Is it worth paying twice as much for the 80?  Or is it best not to buy them at all if they have color rendering below 85?

Use a light is the only important thing. More light is better, cheap lights are great if they're made well. I use LEDs idk what their color temp is, but I went for high lumens.

Right, so after everything that has been said in this thread, your contribution and answer to my question is <use any light>...

I think I told you I went for lumens and didn't fret the color rendering as you put it. If you can buy 2 75's or 1 80 get 2 75's. If you disagree then you know what to do...

Right, but let's say you wanted to get the best possible light for your setup.  Wouldn't you fret about these things and look for any evidence to base your claims on?

Everything I see on these forums so far is that Lumen or light intensity is not as important as the color.  Since Color rendering is a specific measurement of how the LED light actually creates the color in terms of wavelength, I'm interested to find out how much I should be caring about these ratings.

Didn't mean to come off as a jerk...

Well you gotta actually light up the room too. I went for LEDs that were bright enough to actually light everything up. From everything I have read and dealt with if there is enough brightness it will be good enough. It's not practical to spend extra dollars on lights for mushrooms. Save that for building custom lights for plants.

For full room I'd see why lumen rating is important since the important measurement is the LUX at the substrate level, which will be attenuated by the environment you're in, which in your case is distance and angle of the light source.

In terms of price, I don't care really.  I just want what is best and in accordance with general conscensus here.

If people like bodhisatta mention Color Rendering in more than one post, I'm following up on it to make sure I get the best possible light.

There's no clear evidence besides anecdotal reports that natural and floro do better. With no idea what wavelengths are appropriate I choose floro bulbs that put out more wavelengths than similar lux and Kcolor LED bulbs.

You want a basic understanding of lux. Our puny LEDs don't ask for a whole lot of power, but will provide more than enough light for your lil mushies!

I utilize ambient window light. So if we are trying to recreate nature 6500k Daylight is plenty if you must use a bulb. Ambient room light is just fine though. Its more about creating a circadian rhythm more than anything.

I bought a smart flood led light with a timer on it because my grow closet/area has weird sockets

I have also used 6500k led strips combined with window light

Figure out what works for your situation

Thanks, that's what I just bought as well.  Didn't want to chance it.  :frown:

Beauty I'll follow up on that.  I have a opaque tub I wouldn't mind maybe putting a small light strip inside.  Would be more discreet that's for sure.

So that would be 12 hours on, 12 hours off?

And I used to use ambient as well... but I rather not have my tub in front of my window and have something more discreet.

You can use 12/12. Its more to create the rhythm and a direction for them to grow. :acidfire:
