Could someone please come up with a wind up microwave oven. This is ridiculous not having on. Thanks.

I need one to camp out and live off the grid. I know you people can do it. I also will be needing a wind up car soon. Please make these things.

How about Solar Powered microwave? Anything like it.

You could probably use solar to charge a car battery or some kind of power bank and hook the microwave up to that.

But also im feeling like if a person desperately needs a microwave, maybe they shouldnt go "off the grid" haha

A microwave oven is typically something like 2-3kW at full power. A hand crank will put out a couple dozen watts at most. Hence, you'd have to crank for 20 to 60 minutes charging up a battery in order to use your microwave for just a minute. You could run the exact numbers on it if you make a couple of good guesstimates and the power rating of a few known/existing components. You'll find that the elbow grease is probably not worth it.

The solar option could work, provided you have a big panel and/or lots of time. Let's say your typical solar influx is 1kW per square meter (which you obviously won't get on all days) and the efficiency if your panel is 20% at most. That means a power output of maybe 200W for a square meter (~9sqft) solar panel. Let's say you have a battery with a capacity of maybe 100Wh (a large car battery, although that wouldn't be suitable for this application as car batteries don't allow for deep cycling), the capacity of your battery will be limited to 2-6 minutes of microwave time. If you bring a 3sqft solar panel with you, you will be able to charge the battery to an acceptable level in 2 to 3 hours. It will just be enough to heat your meal.

If you want to camp or live off-grid, you could of course try to invent a heat source powered by biomass, which may be available where you are. You could think of a contraption where you oxidize the organic compounds in the biomass, which should be an exothermic reaction. I think in fact it's been done before by humans. Some 30,000 years ago.

The wind-up car is a brilliant idea. I assume it won't have to be much bigger than a few inches, right? Hop over to the kids' department in your nearest Wall-Mart and see if they have anything that comes close. If you want it to be bigger, just scale the design up. You'll find that with a rather big engine to turn the crank (you'll never be able to turn it by hand, unless you incorporate a gearbox that will necessitate you to crank it for a couple of hours) and a dangerously big spring, you can make a wind-up car that will easily travel a few hundred feet! With a massive flywheel weighing a ton and spinning up to a couple hundred rpm's, you may even make it go much further. Both concepts would of course be weapons suitable for small-scale terrorism attacks in case they inevitably fail more than means of practical transportation, but you never stated the intended purpose, so I assume this would be okay for you.

Thanks ,but it would be for me. There has to be a way . and for the microwave there also must be a way. If you can have a twelve volt system in an RV then you can have a wind up microwave out in the open. It should be possible what with all the technology out there and higher learning and such.

For about 50 yards under ideal conditions, operated by someone with exceptional muscle power and stamina who is totally worn down and close to a heart attack after the flight.
And even then, the power needed to operate one of those ultralight aircraft doesn't even come close to a microwave. Look at the numbers listed on Wikipedia: a fit adult outputs about 50-150W for about an hour when exercising. Let's assume your meal is about 500g (which isn't much, really; roughly a pint of water and since food you'll generally heat up is likely to be mostly water, this is a feasible guesstimate), it's stored at 20C and you want to heat it up to 100C for eating (so effectively just touching the point of cooking it), which makes a 80C delta-T. Taking water (as a main ingredient in the meal) as a point of reference, you need 4.2J/g per centigrade, so 4.2 * 500 * 80 = 168kJ of energy.

Let's take 100W as the output of an exercising adult - this is 100J/s. That means you need 1680 seconds of continuous 100W output to heat the meal, or a little less than half an hour. Keep in mind that this 100W output is not feasible when only the arms are used, so we're talking about a bicycle kind of setup with a dynamo, charging a battery (as a direct powered 100W microwave wouldn't make any sense due to heat losses over the half hour of heating, making the process MUCH longer and probably never even reaching boiling point) and all the inevitable losses involved in that chain of conversions.

So you're looking at hauling around a small microwave oven, a battery, a bicycle contraption with dynamo and let's say some 45 minutes of brisk cycling to enable you to cook your tiny one-pint meal. A hand crank would work as well, but would make the process take far longer as the power output of your arms is substantially less than from your legs (not to mention you're not going to keep up cranking for a couple of hours).

I figured they worked on a 12 volt system , but then why use a microwave when propane stove works just as well ? Besides folks with money and such hardly use it for anything other than reheating coffee.

Do you think it is a idea worth looking at?

I mean I cook lots of meats in a microwave .

I would think so, with an inverter to step up 12V DC to 115V AC. It doesn't change the energy requirements of the microwave though; you're still talking about >>1kW of power.

What, a hand-cranked or solar-powered microwave? No way. I showed you the numbers.

Just hook up a regular microwave to an exercise bike or rowing machine.

Man koraks was just killing it with the reasons it won't work.

To further illustrate, I recently ran a new circuit in my house for the microwave.

Most rooms have one cable coming from breaker box to the room, and all outlets and switches in the room feed off that one cable.

That one cable is powered by a single pole 20amp breaker. This is USA 120v elect we are talking.

So usinf Watt's Law, 20amps at 120v = 2400watts of available power you can run at once. Split up among the whole room, my electric guitar the light bulbs ceiling fans computer cell phone charger, vacuum cleaner that's running etc.

A badass microwave is 1500watt, an average today is 1000watt.

Microwaves use insane power to run the magnetron.

That's why, any house that's well wired, and I strive to do all my work well, will have a separate circuit with it's own 20amp breaker for it.

Basically, we set aside enough power as your master bedroom for a single microwave when we build a house.

I would LOVE to see someone try and pedal power that shit! I can see a reality show now, some ten person tandem bicycle and everyone turning it hoping to get a puny 800w microwave to cook a hot Pocket and they're all exhausted and have burned 1000 calories each to have warmed up that 300calories of food

For further expansion on the subject look up the original microwave, the RadaRange.

Called the radar range because it was discovered on accident during WWII as we desperately tried to improve radar or else the German U boats would have decimated us.

The first microwaves were 600 pounds, required Tesla lightning coil kind of power and sold for the equivalent of 50,000 dollars

But it was so overpowered it cooked meals in 30seconds.

Talk about scare of altered food today, imagine that kind of accelerated cooking.
