Struggling with fruiting!
    #24694001 - 10/08/17 02:46 PM (3 years, 6 months ago)

Hi everyone.

I have some fully colonized sorghum cakes that I broke up and put into fruiting with a vermiculite casing but after 22 days in fruiting with no results I thought the problem was my 10 watt LED, 6500Kelvin that wasn't making enough heat or something but the temp inside my terrarium was right..

Eventually after trying sunlight too without fruiting I tried to dunk my cakes after scratching because they have shrunk a little bit so I figured they must have been dehydrated coming out of the jars after colonization.

So after scratching, a 24hr cold shock and dunk, and then a "roll" they've been in fruiting for 4 days without pinning.
Will I be able to fruit cakes made of pure sorghum with a bit of a verm case layer? Should I rather take these cakes and go bulk with them using roadkill's post for horse poo tech?
Should I dunk the horse poo cakes before fruiting them or just put them in fruiting directly after casing them the second time now?

Thank you very much for your time!

So I thought I'd tidy this post up a bit and wrap it up since I'm done with this first grow now.

After spawning to bulk I let them colonize for about a week then put them into fruiting, had some issues between deciding weather to fruit them in a bag with holes in it or in a SGFC. End of the day the SGFC did the better job I believe.

This is in the SGFC:

I would go horse dung . I do not know about anything other than using horse dung. As for the "tek" of Roadkill I will have to check that out .

Use the cakes that you have in any event and crumble them into some pasteurized horse dung for best results. They do vary.

Thanks for your input
How long do you wait before putting your horse poo blocks into fruiting after adding the colonized substrate to the horse poo?

It usually takes about three days depending on many factors that are too numerous for me to get into.
As usual when the substrate is fully colonized I start to change the air so as to mimic nature.

When its fully colonized. Which will be obvious.
Should take 7-14 days depending on spawn to substrate ratio

Fruit cakes as cakes for best results.
As cakes are inoculated with spore syringe theyre not the best option to use as spawn for bulk substrate.
Youre effectively putting all your eggs in one basket for the same yield maybe a bit more than you would have got fruiting the cakes as cakes.

After reading your original post your cakes are probably fucked. Start over or post pictures. Dont mix failing cakes with manure.
Never cold shock cubensis theyre tropical and it will set them back.
Never scratch unless you want earlier contamination to set in

Thank you Bodhisatta, can you please tell me why I should not use cakes made from spore syringe for bulk so I can learn from my mistakes and find the right way to go bulk?

Also I do have a lot of myc colonizing from grain to grain transfer, Can I use this for my bulk?

I'll upload some photo's of everything for you tomorrow. That's when I'm planning on checking on the colonizing horse manure.

I'ts been a 4 months struggle to get the 6 year old print I used for my GT strainto take to 1 jar out of 20 I inoculated lol, I want to keep this guy alive.

My other strain I'm using was from a fresh print though.

Thanks again!

So here is an update  - after colonizing in the dark for 3 days my horse poo bulk sub has mycelium poking through the slightly uneven case layer I gave it.
The little bit of horse manure I had left after placing the substrate into their casing containers I took and cased in a jar and put into fruiting immediately to see the difference and the mycelium on that jar hasn't penetrated the casing yet.
I think I might have made too many holes in my small terrarium that I'm testing the cased jar in but still the average humidity in there is 80% and I read a cased specimen will be more forgiving down to even 70% humidity.
My big terrarium that I plan on using when my cased horse poo is fully colonized has slightly less holes in it.

you put your bulk sub in a sgfc like tub thingy? with a some weird objects that dont need to be inside your chamber.

SGFU with verm instead of perlite for humidity because I can't get perlite right now this week.

On top of the vermiculite there is a jar wrapped in tinfoil with the bulk sub and a case layer that I put in fruiting early to compare to the ones colonizing in the dark. The yellow thingy is my meter for checking conditions inside chamber.

I'm thinking of putting my trays in fruiting before they are fully colonized to avoid overlay which is apparently a thing for the strain I'm working with. Any advice guys?

Verm does not replace perlite...it holds moisture perlite releases it.
Just let your subs colonize no need for the dark and overlay does not happen with cubes

Ok guys here is an update with the hopes of getting some more input from you to steer me in the right direction with this first grow.

9 October I cased 3 trays of Transkei with horse poo(70%) and vermiculite(30%) and a horse poo case layer. 50/50 mix
My gypsum was finished so the Transkei trays have no gypsum in the horse poo.

13 October - Cased 3 trays of Golden Teacher with horse poo/Verm and gypsum.
            2 cased and 1 uncased. 50/50 mix.

16 October
After letting my Transkei horse poo trays with a case layer colonize for 7 days I put 2 of the 3 trays into fruiting and let the third one colonize a bit more in the dark.

19 October - Transkei after being in fruiting for 3 days:

19 October
Placed the 3 Golden Teacher trays in to fruiting.

Cased Golden Teacher:

Uncased Teacher:

Uncased and cased golden teacher:

Difference between Golden Teacher and Transkei:

The bottom right one is the Golden Teacher.

Entire Terrarium:

The teacher cakes look a bit shrunk although they do still look wet and they have 15% vermiculite in them after doing a 50/50 mix of substrate/bulk sub so I don't think its from dehydration? ? ?
Should I dunk my cakes before fruiting with their nice water retaining properties?

My Transkei seems to leave an orange effect on the horse poo it's eaten, looks nice.
The third Transkei tray is in another terrarium if you're wondering why the math doesn't add up.

you still need to replace that verm in your Sgfc with perlite. also a SGFC needs to be elevated or the bottom holes are pointless

Yeah I'll replace it ASAP but I need cash, and the container has feet that slightly elevate it at the bottom and I have a HEPA filter on every couple of hours for some air movement around the container.

Thanks for advice though

Hey guys, good news I have my first pin! spotted him this morning!

Problem I have now is that last night I moved the tray from the SGFC that was seemingly dry all the time to a bag with holes in it which is holding nice humidity. So if this pin is from sitting in the SGFC and not the bag then what do I do with my tray now? Back into the SGFC or keep in the bag?

Congrats man!!!I'm a noob at this myself just started seeing pins a few days ago and harvested my first fruits yesterday! I think I would try to dial in your sgfc for the long run,but you might want to wait for a more advanced member to chime in. After my first pin they started coming quick patience my friend.
