Walmart sells the tape you want, and should be a good bit cheaper than that roll you have photo'd at the pet store (assuming you're in US based on the photo). If you don't want to support Walmart, that's commendable, but really no reason to not just get the actual tape

Btw, you can get free tyvek by getting the free tyvek envolopes sitting out front at the post office. Although using this tyvek is probably outdated and not recommended at this point.

This is Canada and the price listed was for the double wide roll. The one I'm holding and considering is only $1.99 CAD. The tek that I'm doing is the grocery store agar tek https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/6613630
I'm from a small town and we don't even have a Walmart here. The only tyvek I can get is in HUGE rolls from the next town over and its VERY expensive.

Will this tape work instead of tyvek? I take it that it just needs to be breathable without letting spores through.

I don't know if that stuff is micropore tape... I did a brief google search on it and it is porous and breathable but very little specific information on the few sites I looked at

There are a few different kinds of porous medical tape and the one you want is micropore specifically, so I would do some research on that brand/type and see if you can verify

On the French side of the box it said "microporoux" or something like that so I figured it was what I was looking for. I'll Google it up though

This... always use the most up to date methods/teks which match your personal style of working

Stuff gets updated and improved every 1-3 years, and updated doesn't always mean more complicated - lots of times it ends up being much more simple to use current methods compared to stuff from 6-10 years ago.

That said, there's still use for micropore tape so it wouldn't hurt to know what you have access to.

But also remember polyfil as an option.

There's some who say neither of these offer any real protection, and have offered some good science to back it up, however in real world application they both seem to work pretty decently IMO. I personally use a combination of tyvek and polyfil for my jarholes most of the time.

DarkyDonno ....

#1. You don't need a quarter inch hole on the top of your dish.
Drill a 1/16" hole in the upper side of the dish and cover it with Micro-pore tape... (Look at the size hole in a store bought petri dish, It's a very small hole). The smaller the hole on the side give less chance for wicking of bacteria...

#2 Always replace your tape with new, just to be on the safe side when reusing dish...
