Glove Box or Flow Hood?
    #24686925 - 10/05/17 10:50 PM (3 years, 7 months ago)

I need to raise funds right now. The two items that would give me what I need are either my glove box, or my laminar flow hood.

I can pick a new/used one up again in 2 months at the next lab auction. Auctions happen once every 3 months. Well, at least I hope they will have another one avaliable. They have them available at least half the time. I picked up my laminar flow hood for $10, and my glove box for $50. I can sell the glove box right now for $1,200, or the flow hood for $1000. That's the current price for used ones on EBay. I just need $900, so either will give me what I need.

Which one do you think I will need more?
Which one should I sell?

I bet it's like one for sandblasting or something. Those can get pricy.

OP, sell the glove box. Use the hood. Build a SAB (if you need one, but if you have a hood you don't) for like $20.

BTW, next time you can get a hood for $10 PM me. I'll pay way more than $10.

Yes, its a high end one. It has a side chamber that is independently sealed from the main chamber. If I want to add something into the box, I open the mini chamber door, put something in, close the door, filter the air, and open a door inside the main chamber to get everything out of the small chamber. Both have the option for open and closed loop gas control. I can even filter the air in it out, through a mini HEPA, and back into another port. Hell, the chamber even holds a vacuum. The gloves for it cost a few hundred dollars each alone. It came from a bio-chemical lab.

I actually picked up 2 of them ($10 each) when I got it, but my friend decided to borrow one, and it got caught in the rain. I checked the HEPA, and it was destroyed. I had to throw it out. (sold its motor for $80) :frown:

How much would you pay me for one?

But I'm the main guy at the auction that knows the resale prices of all the lab equipment. I make deals with the other other resellers. I tell them what I want, they tell me what they want, and we don't drive up the prices on each other. Next auction, I wouldn't be surprised if I pick another one up for $10 again.

There are 3 kinds of people that come to the auction.
1. Resellers - We pay 10% or less of resale value, no more.
2. Consumers - They pay up to 90% of retail value, and think themselves fancy.
3. Metal scrappers - If they bid, let it go. They will outbid you.

My favorite local one is the University of Denver. Search for good sized universities that teach biochemistry. Some of them have auctions to get rid of all sorts of stuff. Computers, tablets, servers, server racks, all kinds of lab equipment, laser enclosures (pop em open and check for the laser), etc. Or just search for auctions in your area. There are all kinds of auctions. Even specialty ones.

Yeah, and if you have a smart phone these days, you can go to the pre-aiction and check prices of interesting stuff online. Sell it on eBay. Easy money imo. The pre-auction is where I talk to the other buyers to form noon compete agreements.

But the right colleges can be consistent with the lab equipment in their auction.

Some auction places are completely random. Others are somewhat predictable.
