I just set up my first mini mono. It's unmodified, and I just put the spawn in last night...
Should I crack the lid? Leave it on top but don't shut it? Should I be fanning/opening the lid at all at this point? I know I have to increase FAE when ready to fruit, but what do I do before that point?

I would put the lid on all the way and leave it be for a week or so

So this is my first time using agar, or growing at all for that matter. Quite a bit of my dishes are sloppy but would this still work fine?

Hello, I'm new the site and have no idea if I am responding correctly. I am interested in cultivating myself and aftersome research I have a few questions. Initially , after a web search, I was going to jump right in and buy a "grow kit" along with a 10cc spore syringe. after some research, I have discovered it is likley not this simple. I have read a comprehensive guide outlining the rice cake and tapered jar method, and am assuming this is an alternative to the grow box, and that either way I would need to transfer to a teranium after colonization? Or would this occur in the box? Any tips over all would be greatly appreciated and very helpful ! Would you suggest starting off using the grow box ( one which is intended for this very purpose but does not effectively outline the entire process ), and then, assuming I need to, transfer to simple teraniums made out of plastic bottles ? Then perhaps try my hand with some tapered jars and a more elabrote teranium ? No idea where to start.
Please forgive any stupitiy or incorrect terminology, I am very new to this but eager to learn!

Yes the pf tek will work great for you you will need a fruiting cjamber for the cakes so research the shotgun fruiting chamber

I love all of you, and I'm about to make some Pasty Plates!
Everyone here has so much patience. Like how you probably answer the same questions a lot. Like this one: Spore Syringes last a while, right? A tube of PE spores, never taken out of the box and in a cool space, should last a few months, right? That's one of the benefits of agar? To keep a syringe for a long time?
Cause they keep a long time?
Right?
Thank you to everyone. All of you are beautiful.

I use the search feature, but different people say different things. Maybe a better question would be: How long have you held a syringe or a print and have it still be viable?
My pressure cooker is going right now. I'm fucking pumped!

Fuck it, I can buy more spores and make more plates if this one is bad. I don't mean to waste your time. I'll think of better questions.

I made a batch of oats using worm castings in the soak water. I put PE to those jars, and they're growing twice as fast as some B+ I knocked the same day to jars prepped with just coffee and gypsum. All are clones and were kept under the same conditions, the only variable seems to be the castings. I might have used slightly bigger wedges when doing the PE, but I don't think that would account for such a radical difference.
My question is, is there any reason not to add castings to your grain soak? Like why do all the spawn teks only mention gypsum and coffee as additives?

Yeeeeeah this is true, buuuuuuut I've done runs with both of these varieties and PE is always a bit slower. I do have a couple jars left that I was going to knock with my B+ cultures to do a true comparison, or truer since temps will fluctuate a bit, but I'm fairly confident that there's a correlation between the added nutes and the rate of colonization.
What I wanted to ascertain is if there's any risk of throwing off the PH or over-elevating nitrogen by adding castings.

Because you dont need any other additives for grain spawn. Coffee speeds up colonizing gypsum keeps your grains from clumping....and some will tell ya you dont need either

I guess, but I think there's a difference between merely surviving and actually thriving. You can eat shit food and not die, but you can eat healthy and really maximize your growth and development. If I'm getting good info out of CH's Additives thread, coffee and castings provide a lot of the same nutes. So if coffee speeds colonization, why wouldn't castings help as well?
I'm going to run two B+ clones in the casting treated grains and see if there's accelerated growth compared to the untreated grain. What I really wanted to know is if there's any danger in using the castings cause I didn't measure shit last time, but I'll just use the Additives thread as a reference even though it's based on subs instead of spawn.

Super stoked with what I got but if there was one thing I would change, I would want a more homogenous harvest with fewer popcorn shroomies with broken veils and rather more full size 10-20 gram fruits.
I would assume overall health of my mycelial base is key here along with having proper fruiting conditions i.e. good FAE, high humidity and lighting. But what, if anything, am I missing, what are the limiting factors to homogenous maturation (and overall fruit size) in your experience?

as you can see in the second photo I have a bunch of little popcorn shrooms and aborts that the cakes couldn't fully support

your cakes are way too dry. they should not be blue. dry cakes produce small fruits.
also not growing from multispore makes for a more uniform grow

Ah thank you munch!
The relative humidity where I am has been at around 30% the last couple weeks which I think caused my perlite to dry out quickly. I ran the whole thing under the shower last night and have the fruits dunking for 24 hours before I go for the second flush--hopefully this helps. Thanks again!

Munch & Bod,
Here's the same Ghostie plate after growing out a bit. After getting passed the divot made by my loop, it looks more clearly like cube myc to me now.

I also think how shitty my agar is within the plate is effecting growth a bit. I made these in my old SAB setup which wasn't level and I think I ran out of agar for this plate anyway.

Tell me if I fucked up:
I pressure cooked a pack of glad minis for 45 minutes. Let them cool over night. Took the foil and napkin off in the box. Then, I shook the syringe good, and blowtorched the needle. After it was cool, I placed 3 drops on to agar. I re-flamed the needle for the others.
3 plates are by my bed getting ambient light. I'm gonna slice the nicest looking mycelium from one, and place it on a clean agar plate.

So I have about 20 jars now colonizing with ms. All bird seed. The first jars were made with some real cheap seed, cracked corn first ingredient. Then I bought penntingtons classic no cracked corn. Most of the cheap shit colonized fully in 14 days, then I knocked up the better seed with the same syringe and at one week their not even ten percent and very weak looking. Is it the corn that's accelerating the first jars? And if so why does everyone talk like it sucks?
