What does it mean if I am getting larger fruit growing from the very bottom of my cakes (like between the cake and foil) and smaller pinset at the top??? Is this a sign of low humidity?
Should I leave them be? Flip the cake on its side? Flip the cake 180*?

there is better surface conditions between the lid and the cake than elsewhere. the sizes are just different genetics. every cake is a unique snowflake when you grow from spores.

Its mold and you don't save plates. If you have a culture in it you transfer to a new one. If you don't have a culture in it you toss it.

Are you sure, 3/5 cakes are showing more advanced growth on the bottom than on the top.
Isn't it unusual to see any growth from the very bottom period?
First grow for me, thanks for the knowledge!

like i said. every cake from spores is a special snowflake. no two are alike.
it is not unusual to see growth on the bottom. its quite common actually. perhaps even more so when you use the wrong jars.
simply put, the mushrooms grew on the bottom because the conditions were right for mushrooms to grow.

OK thank you,
So should I just leave them be or try flipping the cakes?
FYI strain in GT and they were colonized in 1/2 pint mason jars

naw the mushrooms like it there for a reason, leave them be. they will grow outwards from the bottom no problem.

Cool man, thank you!
One more question: in your experience, after colonizing in the jars, do the tops of the cakes (lid side) or the bottoms of the cakes (last to colonize) have any lesser or greater propensity to fruit?

They fruit from the best microclimate. For cakes often times it's the bottom.

Question about swiping on agar.
I've noticed when I swipe I get small satellites in areas that are not along the path I took with my loop. They look like normal mycelium, I'm just curious about how they got there. Could some spores be falling off the end of loop as I'm preparing to swipe and/or being flung out as I'm swiping?
Again, not so much concerned as I am curious about how the spores are being dispersed.
Thanks

Maybe he got some water from condensation on the agar and the water dispersed some spores over the plate? Note that I'm asking a question, not giving an answer...

Great thread idea, will be dense and helpful.
How likely are you to get high producing genetics from MS? I am thinking of taking one transfer after clean growth and calling it a day.

It's a Pasty Plate made with tato flakes so kinda hard to get good pics but you can sorta see in this one.

1 & 2 may have been me running the loop along the edge at the end of my swipe, but the other two I'm unsure of. I think Josex may be on to something with the condensation because I do usually end up with a small amount of water on the surface of the plates, even when they're stiff AF.
I've just been avoiding the satellites when taking wedges even though they look benign enough.

I'm not sure what the issue is. It's a spore swipe plate. Take from the areas you expect are good, avoid the satellites and if your receiving plates don't have satellites they are good to use. Not sure what the concern is

Eh, I'm not concerned so much as curious and trying to learn...like I've only made/seen about 5 swipe plates so I'm honestly not even sure what they normally look like. My expectation would be that growth would be isolated to just the path of the loop, which it more or less is, but there's those couple outliers I've seen on basically every plate I've done so I was just wondering if that's a thing that just happens and if there's a mechanism behind it.
We're all sorta scientists, I'm just reporting my observations and trying to compare notes

Well it's possible that they are just spores that got flung off the loop. I have had satellites from perfect transfers that ended up being cube mycelium. I suspect it was a fragment that fell from the wedge during transfer. If that can happen then it's certainly possible that spores get bashed off the loop during swiping. Lencacillium spores can move up to 2 feet when hit with a droplet of water so we know they can travel.
Or maybe it's satellite colonies from sloppy transfers. If they take over the whole plate or turn color you know they are mold. If not don't worry and just transfer away.
I am definitely not a scientist. But I appreciate your sediment.
