Bug free grain every time. 5

You will need grains in a bag and some diatomaceous earth
Even if the bugs were in your grains from the store this will do the trick.
open your bag. find the end that you can pull the string, this way you don't dick your back up trying to cut it open.
that was easy, no scissors or knives.
a couple spoonfuls of DE
sprinkle on top
and shake a bit
DE is made out of silicon dioxide, an anti caking agent. In such small amounts is negligible in your grows though it's likely inert to fungi anyway.
These 50# bags contain 22,680 grams of oats I use 220 grams of oats per quart that's 103 quarts per bag I used about 30mL of DE in one bag. that's 0.3mL of DE per jar give or take.
If you've read my TEKs you know I use only coir and oats. you can calculate your BE very easily if you have 650g of coir in your grow and 220g of dry oats per quart say you use 5q of spawn to one brick 650g of coir for a a tub that's a dry weight of ingredients of 1750 grams. to calculate BE it's wet weight / dry weight of everything used so you will need 1750 wet grams or 350 grams wet per quart to achieve 100% BE my cubes dry up to be about 93% water usually 1750 wet gives me ~122.5 dry or ~24.5 dry per quart. (it's not easy to calculate your BE from a dry weight unless you have an accurate % moisture content of your shrooms, we commonly cite 90% for mushrooms but I find that number to never match my cubensis harvests) Getting an ounce per quart dry using a 5q to 1brick ratio is something MS grows easily do on simple oats and coir and that's a starting point.

So no gypsum needed as the DE will prevent the grains from sticking?

Hey bodhi, I'm a bit confused with this last part on BE if you could clarify for me. So you say 24.5g dry per qt is 100% BE with the numbers you use which checks out, but then you say getting an oz per qt is an easy starting point, but wouldn't that be over 100% BE? Is that kosher? Or am I getting mixed up somewhere else?
Edit: I calculated the BE of a dry oz per qt to be around 114% using your numbers correct me if I'm wrong
Also @teladi the de is for bugs you can still add gypsum if you want, but gypsum is pretty unnecessary either way

That's not the point at all. Use gypsum if you want. If you do the grains right they don't stick regardless
@potnug yes an ounce per quart in that situation is over 100 thats exactly what the math shows

What typo? I showed 24.5 is 100% anything over that, such as an ounce is over 100%

Noice, I once had bugs in my sorghum. I have a 25kg bag of food grade DE I bought for $17 that's lasting me a lifetime. Used it to try and get rid of a gnat problem, but now I don't know what to do with the rest, it just lies around.
Would the bugs run away or do they just die in the grain when doing this?

Ignorant question: what does BE stand for? I would have searched, but I figured looking for what the search engine would almost certainly recognize as a common English word might be a tad inefficient...

Biological efficiency. A really dumb way to measure yield that stamets came up with. The rest of the world just goes % yield and calls it a day
