Shoebox Surface Conditions
    #24674425 - 10/01/17 08:45 AM (3 years, 7 months ago)

Idk what to do because I am a noob.

I have these 4 shoeboxes I spawned two days ago.

All four look about the same.

First signs of growth on top layer popped up.

Idk what to do.

I read the importance of surface conditions. I can't really tell by looking in from the side. And I am a noob so maybe can't tell anyway.

Don't know if I should peek open and possibly spray if the sub is dry or keep the FAE down and just leave these guys be and let them do what they do...

Basically how do I know if I should open and mist or leave closed...?
Do you guys check conditions thru box or open lid to check?
Anything helpful to look for.. Like I mean, if it looks dry spray her up?

Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks.

First of all mushrooms need fresh air in order to thrive. If you keep the thing sealed up thy will be stunted /stagnated if they grow at all.
All you should do is change change the air once or twice a  day and spray some water on/in if it seems dry.
Mushrooms will show up. But , not if you have a tub that is all sealed up with no fresh air.
Think about it . How is it in nature? There are a few days with rain and then some wind blows. Then mushrooms appear.

The best thing to do is keep that box in a warm place until it is all white or is otherwise fully colonized. Maybe a couple three more days.
Then just give some fresh air but do not seal it up ; just place the lid on imperfectly.
A few days more and you will start to see pinheads and then mushrooms all over the place a few days after that.

he spawned them two days ago... they're colonizing. and they're not sealed up either.

right now just wait till they're colonized. do nothing

they are shoeboxes. your mindset is correct about sealing things up but shoeboxes are different.
but most of what you said is wonky at best.

OP- they look fine. leave em alone for a few days until it looks roughly like this.

then flip the lid and keep it looking nice and moist and glistening. similar to this..

keep it up with just a mister and a flipped lid. later you get this

rawr!

Hi Enkidu.  Here are a few threads that explain in detail how to achieve proper surface conditions for your bulk substrates.

during colonization your surface conditions don't really matter,(not to say they don't at all) they should be good anyway because there's no FAE to evaporate the surface. unless you made the substrate too dry to begin with. Otherwise it should look pretty fine on the top until fruiting conditions. then you might have to mist to maintain or you might not depending on your conditions, situation, environment. etc..

Figured I might as well just bump this thread since It seems to pertain to the OP.

So basically 3 of the shoeboxes look like this.

One of them is a little slower. It had one quart instead of 2 of spawn.

Does this look healthy ?

Would you guys continue to let colonize or would you recommend I flip the lid and start to mist...?

The parts that aren't blurry look fine.

It needs a mist.
